Vikings, Lions on top after first day of MSL championships

Teays Valley’s girls picked up three event championships in scoring 58 points Tuesday to take the early lead at the Mid-State League Buckeye Division track and field championships.

Liberty Union’s boys claimed three titles to hold the early lead on their side of the meet being held at Circleville High School.

Teays Valley’s Natalie Newton led the way for the Vikings as she cleared 10-6 to win the pole vault and leapt 16-3 to win the long jump.

TV’s Shae Shackleford and Amanda-Clearcreek’s Rachel Weaver each cleared 4-10 in the high jump with Shackleford getting the title through the tiebreaker process.

Logan Elm’s Annie Karshner had a throw of 34 feet 5.75 inches to win the shot put and she took third in the discus.

Hamilton Township’s Halaya Woodson won the discus with a throw of 116-6 and was second in the shot put.

Fairfield Union won the only running event contested as a final as it’s 3,200-meter relay team completed the eight laps in 10:00.7. Teays Valley was second at 10:20.2.

The top performance of the night came as things were winding down when Liberty Union’s Jimmy Miller won the pole vault. Miller cleared 16 feet and came close to clearing 17. Circleville’s Zach Buitendorp was second at 11-6.

Miller also took home the long jump title with a leap of 21-6.25.

LUs Jacob Miller, who has had multiple 20-plus strikeout games for the Lions’ baseball squad this season, won the high jump clearing 6-2.

Hamilton Township’s Malcolm Denny was a double winner in the throwing events. He took the title in the shot put with a distance of 43-2 and won the discus with a throw of 138-8.

Bloom-Carroll took home the title in the 3,200-meter relay with a time of 8:23.67. Fairfield Union was second at 8:33.16.

The eight Buckeye Division schools will return to Circleville High School Friday for the running finals. Events begin at 6 p.m.

Girls team scores: Teays Valley 58, Fairfield Union 52, Logan Elm 51, Hamilton Township 23, Bloom-Carroll 20, Circleville 11, Liberty Union 10, Amanda-Clearcreek 10.

Boys team scores: Liberty Union 43, Hamilton Township 39, Bloom-Carroll 37, Circleville 36, Teays Valley 28, Fairfield Union 23, Amanda-Clearcreek 15, Logan Elm 14.
