Aces finish as district runner-up

No. 1 Columbus Academy 42, No. 14 Amanda-Clearcreek 32

MOUNT VERNON — Amanda-Clearcreek already had knocked off No. 3 and No. 4 on their way to the Division V Central District title game, but No. 1 Columbus Academy was a hurdle the 14th-seeded Aces were unable to clear.

After losing the first game of the season, Friday’s 42-32 win over AC was the 24th straight for the Vikings as they now move on to a regional semifinal against Ottawa-Glandorf out of the Northwest District.

While Academy wasn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard in the first half, the Aces struggled to put the ball through the hoop as they were 2-17 from the field and trailed 14-8 at halftime.

The Vikings scored the first eight points in the third quarter to get up 22-8 and kept AC just far enough away that the Aces couldn’t get any closer than nine points the rest of the night.

Taylor Evans led the Aces with nine points with Hayden Plank adding six and Kaylie Wilson five.

Evans finishes out her career with the Aces with 1,197 points – fourth all-time for Lady Aces. (Click for a list of the area’s 1,000-point scorers.)

After a rough start to the season, the Aces had won 10 of their previous 11 games before Friday and finish the season with an 11-14 record.

Friday marked the second straight Central District runner-up finish for the Aces, who will move to the Southeast District next year.
