BAINBRIDGE — Early turnovers and a big night for the opposing tailback led to the wrong outcome for Westfall as the Mustangs fell 41-20 at Paint Valley Friday.
PV junior Braylon Robertson carried the ball 24 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns while adding 36 yards receiving and an interception on defense.
Robertson started the night’s scoring with a 33-yard run just 81 seconds into the game.
Three first half turnovers by the Mustangs and a second quarter, 92-yard scoring drive by the Bearcats had PV up 14-0 at halftime.
The Mustangs converted an onside kick to start the second half and turned it into points (8-yard run from Bryce Wickline), but the Bearcats came right back with Robertson scoring a few plays later.
Westfall then turned the ball over on downs on its ensuing possession and Robertson took the next play 41 yards for his third TD.
Westfall committed its fourth turnover of the night when it fumbled the kickoff and PV’s Gage Wagner picked it up and returned it for a touchdown and a 33-7 lead.
Westfall added a Cade Hall touchdown late in the third.
The Bearcats added a passing TD in the fourth and Wickline scored from a yard out in the fourth for the Mustangs.
“If we clean up the turnovers, we’re 4-1, 5-0,” Westfall coach Logan Stepp told WKKJ’s Scoreboard Show Friday night. “We’ve lost to some top 10 teams in the state and competed with all of them. We’ve just got to clean up the turnovers.”
Wickline was 14-30 passing for 164 yards Friday and also led the Mustangs in rushing with 113 yards on 21 carries.
Joey Wright had 45 yards on eight carries and 30 yards on four receptions.
Jaden Towler had 73 yards on five catches and Trent Walters had three grabs for 50 yards.
The Mustangs (2-3, 0-2) return home Friday to take on Southeastern (1-4, 0-2), which fell 44-31 to Adena on Friday.
