WAVERLY — New Hope held off host Waverly Saturday night to post a 46-41 win.
The Statesmen scored the game’s first 10 points and were up 14-5 with two minutes left in the first but Waverly closed to 14-12 by the end of the period.
A low-scoring second quarter saw NH give up only four points but added only seven to their totel to lead 21-16 at the break.
“It was one of the best halves of defense we played this season. We communicated, we were physical and did not give up any offensive put backs,” New Hope coach Shane Roese said. “Offensively we just needed to be a little more patient and execute better. Late in the season attention to detail is vital to success.”
Waverly took its only lead on the night midway through the third at 29-28 but a pair of Gavin Luden free throws put New Hope back on top and the quarter ended with a 33-30 NH edge.
Four points each from Xander Rink and Lane Bruning helped the Statesmen get up 39-32. Waverly came back to get it to three late when Rink stole an post entry pass and Bruning sunk a pair of free throws to close out the win.
“It was a very solid road win for us as we get prepared for our end of the season tournament,” Roese said. “We played solid defense, made baskets when we needed and answered each of their runs.
“We made it interesting down the stretch, we had a seven-point lead at the five-minute mark, and it would have been nice to close it out from there. But to Waverly’s credit they battled back and made it tough on us.”
New Hope has a game at Wellington on the schedule for Tuesday.
