Unioto 64, Westfall 42
CHILLICOTHE — Westfall struggled to get the ball in the hoop in the first half while host Unioto took control early on the way to the Shermans posting a 64-42 win.
Both teams were trying to get in a rhythm as Unioto had the game’s only two points through the first four-and-a-half minutes, but the Shermans finished the first quarter strong to lead 15-4.
“I think we were actually doing some of the things we wanted and just couldn’t get some looks to go,” Westfall coach Kyle Jospeh said. “And then I think we were just a little shell shocked, deer in the headlights, where we just, we weren’t moving.
“Just credit to them, they came out with a good game plan and kind of took it to us from the start.”
Unioto had the lead up to 22-4 before Westfall scored in the second quarter and the Shermans led 29-9 at the half.

While the Mustangs were doing a good job of getting the ball inside to attack the basket, Unioto center Dawson Mitchell was making it hard to finish. The 6-8 senior, along with some help defense, kept the Mustangs from finishing in the first half.
“We were having a hard time getting anything at the basket and couldn’t draw any fouls in the first half either,” Joseph said.
Westfall came out in the second half and did a better job scoring. But the Mustangs had dug too big a hole and could get no closer than 17.
Unioto’s Jack Welch was the game’s top scorer with 20 points while his teammates – Isaac Coy and Blake Fitch – each had 17.
Joe Wray led Westfall with 18 while Bryan Craig had 10 and Ethan Rose had nine.
“We made a few adjustments to get some things going a little at halftime, but you’re down by that much, and you’re having to fly around on defense and you give up a few more points that way,” Joseph said.
Unioto ended the night with a 28-23 rebounding edge led by Mitchell with 10. Brock Williams and Gavin Packer each had five for Westfall.

“Like I told the guys in (the locker room), that’s just kind of sports. Sometimes you get your butt whipped, and the only thing to do is get back on the bus and get back to work,” Joseph said. “We’ve got a lot of season left. We’ve got two games next week, and we just gotta go get ready to play on Tuesday.”
The Mustangs travel to Piketon Tuesday and are home with Southeastern Friday.
