Teays Valley put up a good battle on Wednesday against perennial district power Hilliard Bradley, falling 50-39 in a non-league game.
“We told he kids that (Wednesday’s) game was basically a district final ball game,” TV coach Brian Barnett said. “We needed to treat it like a district final and match toughness and physical play while taking care of the ball on the offensive end of the floor.”
The Jaguars jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the first quarter and extended their lead to 25-18 at halftime and 36-28 going into the fourth quarter.
“I give our kids a lot of credit, because we had one of the top teams in the Central District coming to play and we gave them everything they could handle,” Barnett said. “The difference in the game was they made big shots when the game was a one or two possession game and we were not able to convert.”
Camden Primmer led the Vikings with 12 points, and Jackson Smith and Cameron-Dyas Rogers each added eight points.
“We did a great job on the offensive end getting the shot that we wanted,” Barnett said. “We were very patient on the offensive end of the floor and did a good job on the offensive glass.
“Camden Primmer was solid on both ends of the floor, shooting the ball well on the offensive end and guarding on the offensive end. Our bigs of Eli Burgett and Cameron Dyas-Rogers battled for rebounds on both ends.”
Keaton Norris led all scorers with 18 points for the Jaguars (4-0), who had won their first three games by an average of 30.1 points.
“Inside it was very physical,” Barnett said. “Peyton Weiler did a good job of guarding Keaton Norris, every point he scored was earned. Jackson Smith, Bret Wilson and Reese Sauerbrun gave us a big lift coming off the bench. Jackson and Bret both hit big shots and Reese brought the physical toughness that is required in games of this type.
“Even though the outcome was not what we wanted, we took a huge step forward as a basketball team and are looking forward to turning the page to 2021.”
The Vikings (1-3) resume Mid-State League Buckeye Division play on Saturday at Circleville.
