Indians upset Vikings in newly expanded playoff field

ASHVILLE — A balanced approach on offense and winning the turnover battle on a rainy late October evening allowed No. 13 Stebbins to upset No. 4 and host Teays Valley 41-27 on Friday in a Division II, Region 8 first-round game.

After notching their first postseason victory in program history last year when all teams made the playoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indians (6-4) won for the first time when the field was limited, albeit 16 teams per region. The Ohio High School Athletic Association expanded the postseason field from eight teams qualifying per region in 2019 to 16 this season.

Stebbins could thank Nate Keller for advancing to a regional quarterfinal next week at No. 5 Edgewood (8-2). The four-year starting quarterback completed 9 of 16 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns and added 108 yards rushing on 12 totes and another score. Omar Holloway also scored three touchdowns, all via the ground game, and rushed for 82 yards.

Stebbins quarterback Nate Keller passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another in a 41-27 win over Teays Valley.

The Indians never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead on a 22-yard touchdown run courtesy of Holloway. Shawn Dozier added the first of five extra points on the night.

Teays Valley (9-2) countered with an eight-play, 80-yard drive, solely using its run game. Camden McDanel covered the first 72 yards and Peyton Weiler grinded out the final eight, including a one-yard plunge over the goal line on third-and-goal. The first of three extra points by Cale Clifton tied the game.

Keller provided the answer for the Indians by hooking up with Dozier on a 42-yard scoring pass to go ahead 14-7 with 32 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

The Indians expanded their lead to 21-7 on a two-yard run by Holloway with 8:37 remaining before halftime.

Teays Valley reached into its bag of tricks to again make it a one-score game, using a 35-yard halfback pass from Peyton Weiler to Harrison Payne on fourth-and-11.

Stebbins, however, took a 27-13 lead into halftime, thanks to a four-yard touchdown pass from Keller to Dalton King.

Keller capped the Indians’ first possession of the second half with a 33-yard touchdown run, giving Stebbins its largest lead of the night at 34-13.

Teays Valley continued to battle and put together a 13-play, 72-yard drive. Love rushed for 71 yards on the possession, including a 28-yard sweep around left end to set up first-and-goal. Weiler took it the rest of the way, from two yards out, to make it 34-20.

The Vikings closed to within a possession at 34-27, following an 85-yard touchdown bomb from Love to Payne with 5:35 remaining.

Teays Valley’s Harrison Payne hauls in an 85-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Love during the fourth quarter.

Stebbins would not be denied as it used a short field to put together a 50-yard drive that was capped by an eight-yard touchdown run by Holloway with 1:56 remaining.

The Indians ended the Vikings’ final possession of the night with an interception.

Teays Valley had a pair of first-half takeaways on a fumble recovery from Love and an interception courtesy of Parker Baisden, but Stebbins came away with three turnovers on a pair of fumbles and an interception.

Teays Valley consumed 348 yards rushing, led by McDanel with 20 touches for 148 yards, Love covering 107 yards on 13 carries and Weiler using 18 carries to cover 81 yards.

Teays Valley’s Camden McDanel rushed for 148 yards on Friday in a first-round playoff game against Stebbins.

The Vikings lose 16 seniors to graduation after earning a top four playoff seed for just the third time in program history.
