Weiss tosses one-hitter, helps Mustangs rout Belpre in tourney opener

From beginning to end on Monday, Peyton Weiss was in control.


The Westfall senior tossed a one-hitter in a 10-0 Division III Southeast District sectional semifinal win over host Belpre.


The Mustangs (10-14) advance to a sectional final on Thursday at top-seeded and Scioto Valley Conference co-champion Zane Trace, who won both regular-season meetings.


Weiss walked two batters and struck out 12 in a 91-pitch outing, while also having a big day at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, double, four RBI and two runs scored.


Westfall reached the scoreboard in the third inning when Weiss doubled to center with one out and scored on a single to left off the bat of Bryant Coker.


The Mustangs tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.


Hunter Wright opened the inning with a single to left. Pinch-runner Gardner advanced to second when Brandan Lowe walked and to third on a single to left courtesy of Trent Walters.
After a fly out, Weiss grounded to short for a fielder’s choice that knocked in Trent Gardner.
An error allowed Lowe to score and put the Mustangs ahead 3-0.


Westfall delivered the knockout blow with a seven-run seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Weiss and RBI singles from McCoy and Ashton Nunemaker.


Nunemaker went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, Bryce Wickline was 2-for-4 and scored and McCoy went 2-for-3 wth an RBI and run scored.
