Teays Valley used its defense to provide the spark plug on Saturday for its offense to drop 24 first-quarter points on host Amanda-Clearcreek in a 55-23 Mid-State League Buckeye Division win.
“I thought we did a great job of being focused on what needed to be done tonight,” Teays Valley coach Brian Barnett said. “We did a nice job of setting the tone early, with our defensive pressure.”
Ryan Allton had eight points in the opening quarter and used his stingy defense to force several A-C turnovers. The Vikings also established their inside game with Sam Miller dropping six of his game-high 14 points.

“Ryan Allton did a great job of putting defensive pressure on their point guard,” Barnett praised. “He got us a lot of easy baskets because of his defensive pressure.
“Sam Miller did a great job on the offensive end tonight, shooting 7 of 7 from the floor. Sam and Ivan Smith did a good job of controlling the paint.”
Taylon Conrad had the lone two points for the Aces in the period, which ended with the Vikings leading 24-2.
Teays Valley extended its lead to 40-10 at the break. A pair of freshmen were prominently featured during the second quarter with Kole Nungester scoring seven points and Brody Fields adding six of his 12 points.
“Those two keep getting better each day and each game,” Barnett said of his freshmen duo. “We were able to extend the lead tonight, which allowed us to play some of our younger players.
“I thought that all of our guys did a good job of competing and playing hard.”

Allton had four steals and four assists to go with his eight points. Smith also scored eight points, and Nungester accounted for seven points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Conrad had seven points and Brady Holbrook added six for the Aces (0-4, 0-2), who travel to Berne Union on Tuesday for a non-league tilt.
The Vikings (2-1, 2-0) are off until Dec. 13 when they continue league play and host Fairfield Union.
