Buckley’s buzzer-beating three lifts Aces past Falcons

By Brad Morris

As Emily Buckley rebounded a missed free throw with the final seconds ticking off the clock on Friday, the Amanda-Clearcreek senior knew what she needed to do with her team trailing by a point.

“I knew I had about four dribbles possible and knew I needed to find and open teammate or get the last shot,” she said. “I ended up driving down the right sideline and I remember looking at the clock as it hit two seconds and knew I needed to get up a shot. I took one more dribble and honestly just threw up a shot. I had two girls collapsing on me trying to (defend the shot) but I was able to get it off in time.”

Buckley’s desperation shot from inside half-court swished through the nylon to lift the host Aces to a thrilling 51-49 Mid-State League Buckeye Division win over Fairfield Union.”

“Watching it go through the net was so exhilarating and is a moment I’ll never forget,” Buckley said. “It truly was such an electric moment for my team and everyone in the stands. The student section stormed the court, and I was honestly still in such shock that it went in. I think that even though I hit the game winning shot we only got to that place because of a great team effort and I’m so proud of my team for their hard work tonight.”

The Aces had trailed 22-20 at halftime and 39-34 entering the fourth quarter but rallied with a 16-10 effort over the closing eight minutes.

Hailey Sowers led the charge with six points in the quarter, Buckley followed with five and Taylor Evans added three markers.

The Aces were also a crucial 7 of 10 from the free throw line during the period.

Evans led the Aces with 18 points on the night, Sowers tallied 10, Buckley had eight and Pugh added seven.

“Taylor had a heck of a game scoring 18 and doing a great job of getting to the rim in the second half on dribble drive opportunities,” Amanda-Clearcreek coach Tim Leist said.

Leist discussed having different girls step up with the loss of 5-10 junior forward Grace Davis to an injury earlier this month.

“We got contributions from a lot of people tonight who stepped up for this win,” he said. “Dealing with Grace’s injury has forced others to step up and that’s what we got out of some people.

“This was our first win over Fairfield Union in at least three years, so this is a big win for our girls and program.”

Nicole Terry led all scorers with 21 points and Elly Lewis added 10 for the Falcons (3-4, 3-3).

The Aces (5-3, 4-2) continue league play on Tuesday at Logan Elm.
