Tigers remain Division II in girls golf — barely

When the Circleville girls golf team hits the links this August to start their quest in qualifying for the state tournament, the Tigers will consist of players from the largest Division II school in Ohio with a base enrollment of 238.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released divisional breakdowns for the remaining fall sports on Tuesday after previously doing so earlier this month in football.

The top enrollment number has been declining in Division II girls golf, which still only has two divisions, to three for boys golf, in recent years, resulting in programs such as Bloom-Carroll, Fairfield Union, Sheridan and Washington Court House moving up to Division I, which features base enrollments from between 239-1251.

Elaina Seeley and her Circleville teammates will compete as the largest Division II school in the state this season, missing the Division I cutoff by one female student.

Circleville finished as a district runner-up last season to Westfall and has its top players all returning as it seeks to qualify to the state tournament for the first time in program history.

The OHSAA uses enrollment data provided by the Ohio Department of Education to determine each school’s base enrollment numbers for girls and boys sports. The base enrollment data is collected every other year to be used for two school years. The upcoming 2023-24 school year is the second year for the current base enrollment data.

The fall sports of soccer and volleyball utilize competitive balance data, so their divisional breakdowns are reconfigured every year. The fall sports of golf, girls tennis and cross country do not include competitive balance data, so their divisional breakdowns are the same in 2023 and 2022. The fall sport of field hockey has one division.
