Season Outlook: The Mustangs open the 10th season of girls soccer on Aug. 11 when they host Miami Trace for Futbol Friday Night.
Long-time area coach George Sauer III is looking for the team to start and turn the corner after a number of younger players received their first varsity experience last season.
“We are going from a team with many newcomers last season to the team and to the sport, to a team with many veteran players, but who are still a bit new to the sport,” Sauer III said. “We want to build upon the experience that those girls received last season.”
Sauer III touched upon building new leadership this season.
“We are going to need to find someone who can fill Mayson Gordon’s cleats,” he said. “Leadership on and off the field will be one of the weaknesses we need to fill. Every team is always looking for their next leader to put the team on her shoulders and help them thru the matches and practices.
“We have a lot of veteran candidates with more experience than before and a lot younger players eager to put the effort in and play hard with only direction and guidance needed that those veterans can give. The growth will come as the season progresses as we all become one team.
“Then, of course, we lose nine seniors, and we hope the process of filling their shoes and roles will be gained this season with their tutelage and hopefully leaving a legacy for years to come.”
