Teays Valley applied some lessons it learned in a season-opening loss to Lancaster and reduced its errors on Monday on its way to a 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16 win over host Grove City.
“We really struggled during our first match at Lancaster because we committed too many errors. I was so proud of how the girls bounced back,” first-year Teays Valley coach Amy Horsley said. “We improved our team serve receive rating and serving percentage (98.6 percent). We reduced our errors from 40 to 36 compared to Grove City’s 48. Our team tallied 26 assists and 48 digs.”
Baileigh Rieder contributed 11 kills, two assisted blocks and five digs; Kennedy Younkin chipped in five kills; Jenna Pence had four kills and three digs; Tessa Bradley dished out 12 assists; Kendall Burgett distributed 11 assists and also had six digs and Ellie Tatman paced the defense with 16 digs.
“I am so proud of all 14 players because they all played well and contributed to this exciting team win. We stayed aggressive, worked together, and had strong communication for all three sets,” Horsley said. “It was great to see positive leadership on the court from our senior captain, Kennedy Younkin, and junior setter and captain, Tessa Bradley.
“We really did rebound after a tough loss to Lancaster and showed again how well we can play if we trust each other, communicate, move, limit our mistakes, and stay aggressive attacking.”
The Vikings (1-1) open Mid-State League Buckeye Division play on Aug. 29 when they host Amanda-Clearcreek.
