Bulldogs gives Braves first loss – 35-6

In a battle for one of the top spots in the Mid-State League standings, Bloom-Carroll showed why it’s been at the top of those standings for the last five years with a 35-6 win over host Logan Elm.

The Bulldogs kept the LE (6-1, 3-1) offense in check most of the night while getting an early lead.

“Bloom did a great job, especially in the first half, keeping our offense off the field. They were getting four to five yards a pop,” LE coach Terry Holbert said.

The Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0) scored twice in the first quarter — first on a 16-yard pass from Ethan Thanthanavong to Tyler Harrison and then on a two-yard run from Dylan Armentrout.

The score stood at 14-0 at the half and LE was the first strike in the second half.

The Braves got themselves back in it with a 39-yard scoring pass from Aaron Walters to Cameron Smith. The kick was blocked leaving the score at 14-6 in favor of BC.

The Bulldogs answered with a drive that ended with Thanthanavong going in from three yards out. Stevenson came up big again for the Bulldogs with an interception a few plays later which led to a 25-yard scoring run from Armentrout.

The final score of the night was set up when the BC defense stopped LE on fourth down at the BC 3-yard line. One the second play of the possession, Armentrout went 92 yards for the score.

“We had several drives in the red zone and ended with zero points,” Holbert said.

That run capped a record-setting night for the senior as he broke his own single-game rushing record with 251 yards on 27 carries, tied the school record with three rushing TDs and tied the BC record for the longest rushing touchdown at 92 yards.

“We’ve got to take this film and learn from it,” Holbert said.

And even though they’ve dropped into second place in the league, the Braves still have a lot to play for as the season progresses.

“We talked about that with the kids after the game, we said everything is still in front of us,” Holbert said.

Getting things back on track starts next week when Amanda-Clearcreek comes to LE. Holbert knows the Aces 2-5 record isn’t indicative of what they’ll see from the Aces along with the rivalry adding to the intensity of the game.

“Amanda is a significantly better football team,” he said. “It is a close game, a rivalry game and it has been for a long time.”

Aaron Walters was 26-41 for 257 yards passing for the Braves. Hunter Kersey had 10 catches for 64 yards, Cam Smith had five catches for 79 yards, Camden Redd had five for 55 yards and Carson Summers caught four for 51 yards.

Landon Thompson finished with 51 yards on the ground on 16 carries.
