CARROLL – A close first quarter would set the pace for the rest of the game, and Teays Valley would use a big night from Brody Fields to beat MSL rival Bloom-Carroll 55-47.
The opening period in this matchup set the tone as the Vikings and Bulldogs exchanged blows throughout the game.
Fields drew first blood in dropping a jumper followed by teammate Sam Miller who added consecutive baskets of his own. Fields had eight points in the quarter, Miller six and Kaden Purdon added a basket as the quarter ended in a 16-16 tie.
In the second quarter, the Vikings started to make better shot selections.
“Between quarters we told our guys to be patient on the offensive end and, when we get the ball, reverse it and get it inside out and drive the ball it will show to be more successful,” TV coach Brian Barnett said.
Fields had seven more in the second while Miller had five, Davin McDowell sunk a three and Luke Burgett and Kole Nungester each scored to give TV a 35-28 halftime lead.
“In the second half we did a lot better of locking them down defensively, getting some deflections here and there, and taking away some of their drives and, offensively, we were a lot more patient, and got great looks,” Barnett said.
And the visiting Vikings dialed up the heat on defense, holding the Bulldogs 2-7 shooting from the floor in the third.
Teays Valley got points from Nungester, Fields, Burgett, McDowell and Miller while holding the Bulldogs to five points to lead 45-33 after three quarters.
The Bulldogs showed some life in the fourth with consecutive Jayce Rockwood and Jackson Wyant jumpers to keep the game in reach. But the Vikings’ defense would hold the host to 4-11 shooting in the fourth (19-49 overall) and take a road win 55-47.
Fields capped a 21-point effort with four free throws in the fourth. Atfer having his streak off 44 straight free throws (15th longest in OHSAA history) end last Friday, Fields went 6-6 at the line Tuesday.
Miller added four points to finish a 17-point effort.
Wyant and Rockwood led BC with 13 each and Tryce Chaffin had nine.
