ASHVILLE — Teays Valley used physical play to collect a crucial Mid-State League Buckeye Division win 48-36 over Amanda Clearcreek Friday night.
The game was opened by a deep three from Vikings’ Gabrielle Watkins. The ensuing Aces possession saw Rachel Weaver drop a jumper of her own to make the score 3-2. A defensive stop would see Vikings freshman Tessa Horsley convert on a layup to make the Teays lead three early in the quarter.
The Vikings (7-4, 4-2) forced an Aces (9-3, 5-2) turnover and found Kennedy Younkin for a driving basket to make the score 7-2 Teays Valley. Amanda would match with a Kaylie Wilson score to cut the Viking lead. Teays Valley would take an Addie Helwagen steal to find Younkin for a cutting layup to make the score 9-4. AC’s Taylor Evans would make a long two to respond for the Aces to cut the Vikings lead but TV’s Abby Tier closed the quarter with a three to make the TV lead 12-6 heading to the second.
“To come out and get a good start to the game was very beneficial for us and even doing that I knew it wasn’t over,” TV Coach Trevor Younkin said.
A Tessa Horsley basket started the scoring for the Vikings in the second, and another basket by Alyssa Horsley led to an early time-out by the Aces. After the time out it was more of the same for the Vikings as they had consecutive scores on a Tessa Horsley layup then a score from Alyssa Horsley to make lead 14.
A basket by the Aces’ Hailey Sowers got the Aces on the board in the second, then a deep three from TV’s Tier would pull the Vikings ahead more.
“I was very excited and proud of how our girls come out and played well against a very solid Amanda team who has some great wins,” coach Younkin said.
A Taylor Evans three would end the scoring for Amanda in the quarter as TV controlled the quarter outscoring the aces 18-5 and taking a 30-11 lead at the half.
Opening the gate in the third was a Tessa Horsley layup, then consecutive Aces baskets — a three from Wilson and a drive from Taylor Evans — made the score 32-16. Then a steal by Tier led to a Younkin basket, taking the Vikings’ lead to 18. Amanda-Clearcreek would drain three consecutive shots to end the quarter to cut the Vikings’ lead to 10 going into the fourth at 36-26.
The final quarter was opened by Alyssa Horsley with a jumper. The Aces responded with an Evans basket, and then consecutive Horsley sister baskets would cause Amanda to take a time-out as the TV lead stood at 14 with 4:55 to go in the fourth. Amanda would draw an offensive foul on the Vikings and then found Evans who was foul and drained both of her shots.
“I wanted physical play because of OCC play, and the refs let us play tonight,” coach Younkin said.
Then Teays Valley would draw back-to-back fouls and use 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 46-32. AC collected baskets from Rachel Weaver and Taylor Evans to close out their scoring and Alyssa Horsley capped the scoring for the Vikings.
Tessa Horsley led the Vikings with 14 points and Alyssa Horlsey had 13 on the night. Kennedy Younkin had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Yonkin had 10 points for the Vikings in the game.
Evans led all scorers with 17 points for the Aces and Wilson put in 10.
