COLUMBUS — Teays Valley came back after the half but fell short to Bishop Hartley 60-52 in the finalé of the three-day Battle in the 614 at Ohio Dominican University.

“I was pleased with our performance. We had to get over the wow feeling initially but later in the first quarter we settled down a bit,” TV coach Brian Barnett said.

Hartley opened the game with the first three scores — Jahki Calloway with two foul shots and a layup, and a long jumper from Pharez Nicholas. The Vikings opened their scoring with a Kole Nungester jumper, followed by a Sam Miller three. Another score by Hartley along with another basket from Miller had the Hawks up 9-7 before Hartley scored the final 10 points to take the lead to 12 after the first quarter at 19-7.

“Going into the second we knew we would have to be aggressive and take it into the basket because the refs weren’t calling much and we knew we could play through it,” Barnett said.

Brody Fields broke through the Hartley defense to begin the tally in the second quarter for the Vikings. Miller added a three-pointer for the Vikings and then Fields had TV’s last 11 points to whittle a few points off the Hawks’ lead to make it 31-23 at the half.

“That is just Brody’s style, playing open and he really led us in the second and also going into the third,” Barnett said.

Bishop Harley came out after half with a score from Jaden Calloway. The Vikings collected a Kaden Purdon scoop and score to open the count for Teays Valley. Then three consecutive baskets from Hartley led to a Vikings’ timeout with 4:38 to go in the quarter.

The momentum swung the Vikings way after the time out with five baskets coming from Cavin McDowell, Miller and Luke Burgett. Then two Fields layups led to a Hawks’ timeout.

“After the half, we made a little switch on defense and that made a difference. On offense, with all the pressure it was hard to find the open guy, but we found guys tonight, and I was pleased with our effort,” Barnett said.

Another Fields lay-up began play after the timeout, followed by a Burgett bucket, which gave the Vikings their first lead of the game at 39-38.

“Luke was a lot more aggressive after half and looked to score more and lead us late,” Barnett said. A Nungester three added to the Vikings’ lead. The Hawks responded with the final five points of the period to take the lead back at 43-42.

Then three scores from Nicholas opened the Hawks’ scoring in the fourth to put a crimp in TV’s comeback hopes as Bishop Hartley outscored TV 17-10 in the quarter.

Fields had 21 points to lead the Vikings and Miller finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
