Kiannah Ingram had a big night as Logan Elm defeated Liberty Union 54-42 Friday night.
The sophomore had eight points in the first quarter, eight in the second, 10 in the third and then went 4-4 at the line in the fourth for 30 points.
“That was incredible,” LE coach Mike Schultz said. “She hit some incredible shots when we needed and really took control of those opportunities that she had.”
Ingram’s effort is part of a renewed focus he’s seen from his Braves in the past two weeks.
“Our level of intensity – I think that halftime of the Amanda game we really put that challenge out to the team and we have played nine, now consecutive, halves of our brand of basketball where we’re completely committed,” Schultz said. “Kiki, she was ready, and it showed really early in this game.”
The Braves led 12-2 at one point in the first quarter and had a 15-8 lead entering the second.
LE’s lead was 10 at the half (27-17).
Along with 10 from Ingram in the third, LE got eight from Kimmy Petty as the Braves extended their lead to 45-28.
The Lions scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to close to nine before Kennedy Groff hit a three for the Braves with a little under five minutes to play.
The Lions had the difference down to six points after a steal and a layup, but Groff quickly answered for LE with a layup on her own. And then Ingram closed out the scoring hitting her four free throws in the final minute.
“We were watching that film of Liberty against Fairfield, and we noticed that same thing where Fairfield built a pretty big margin of a spread as well and (Liberty Union) started chipping back,” Schultz said. “Liberty’s intensity increased, and I think we tried to speed things up a little more than we should. A lot of those things are the controllables that we need to make sure that we work on.”
Along with Ingram’s 30, Petty finished with 10 and Groff had seven.
Paige Devoe led Liberty Union (7-13, 3-9) with 11 and Ella Brown had nine.
“Good news – I think this is also going to help our seeding,” Schultz said of the win.
Post-season brackets will be announced Sunday and this is the first year where the OHSAA will be utilizing a system based off a team’s record and their strength of schedule instead of being based on a vote of the district’s coaches.
The Braves (9-11, 3-8) are next in Action Tuesday hosting Fairfield Union (6-13, 4-9).
