CARROLL — Emily Bratton had a career night for Bloom-Carrol in leading the Bulldogs to a 63-58 overtime win against Teays Valley in this Mid-State League girls’ basketball match-up.
Headed to Miami University to play after high school, the senior had 42 points – 30 in the second half and overtime – Thursday night.
“She just had it in her eyes tonight, not that our girls didn’t, she just showed why she is a D1 player,” Teays Valley coach Trevor Younkin said. “It was one of those battles to contain her and we just came up short.”
The Vikings held a 26-18 lead when the second half started.
Bratton got the scoring going with a long-range three as she had 15 points in the quarter.
Teays Valley was able to maintain the lead throughout the quarter, but BC closed strong and the Vikings’ advantage was down to two — 39-37 — entering the fourth quarter.
The lead bounced back and forth in the final quarter and a three from Bratton had BC up 52-50 with less than a minute on the clock.
TV freshman Tessa Horsley fought for a rebound in traffic off a Kennedy Younkin miss to drop a bucket with seconds remaining and ultimately send the game to overtime knotted up at 52-52.
In the extra period, Bratton sunk two more threes along with two free throws and BC hit five of eight free throws as a team while the Vikings were limited to six points — two free throws from Gabrielle Watkins and baskets from Kennedy Younkin and Alyssa Horsley.
“We were competing, we were right there,” coach Younkin said. “A bucket here, a bucket there goes a different way it’s a different end of the story.
“They always have a great team and a great environment but, at the end of overtime, they had a few more buckets than we did.”
Kennedy Younkin led the Vikings with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Alyssa Horsley put in 13 points and Watkins and Tessa Horsley each had nine. Tessa Horsley also pulled down six rebounds.
