WILLIAMSPORT— Teays Valley bounced back from a rough start to beat Logan Elm 44-37 at the Brad Moris Holiday Classic Friday.

Logan Elm jumped out to a 13-0 lead six minutes into the first period, before the game swung toward the Vikings.

Kaden Purdon broke TVs scoring drought with a minute left in the first period.

Of the 10 points scored in the second quarter they all belonged to the Vikings as the half ended with a 13-12 score in favor of the Braves.

“That was crazy. We got a lot of good shots in the first quarter, and nothing would go down,” TV coach Brian Barnett said. “Give our kids credit, they kept going and going and going. With our record the way it is, and the way things have been going, our kids didn’t drop their heads, and they didn’t deviate from the plan. They stayed right on task and that’s good for us.”

A basket by Brady Neff about a minute into the second half ended a nearly 11-minute dry spell for the Braves. TV answered with the next nine points to get their first lead of the afternoon at 21-15 and the quarter came to a close with TV up 32-26.

“We told them at the break to just hang tight. Once we were able to score buckets, we were able to get into our pressure a little bit and that helped us out a lot,” Barnett said.

The Braves controlled the first part of the fourth quarter with Tyler Speas sinking a pair of three-pointers, Lucas Bialy putting in a three and Ne’Miah Waugh scoring for a 37-32 LE edge.

But after hitting their first four shots from the field, the Braves missed their final seven.

A free throw from Haden McCray tied the game again with 2:46 left. An offensive rebound off the missed second free throw led to Brody Fields hitting a three five seconds later to put the Vikings back on top to stay.

“They came out and went three ball, three ball, three ball, two ball and I was like, uh-oh here we go,” Barnett said. “Defensively, we did a nice job and made a couple switches and put some longer people on their shooters. I thought we did a good job rebounding the ball in the fourth quarter. And we made some shots, and when you make shots, it always makes you look good.”

Fields ended the night with 23 points and five rebounds. Purdon had 10 points for the Vikings and Luke Burgett led the team with six rebounds.

Waugh led Logan Elm with 14 points.

Brady Neff pulled down eight rebounds to go with seven points. Bialy had eight points and six rebounds with Speas putting in eight points, as well.

The Vikings (2-6) open the second day of the Brad Morris Holiday Classic taking on Circleville at 3 p.m. at Logan Elm High School. The Braves (2-8) will host Westfall at 6 p.m.

WILLIAMSPORT —Logan Elm had a strong start to the first-ever game in the Brad Morris Holiday Classic on the way to a 51-40 win over Teays Valley.

A basket from Maggie Wilson, a three from Gillian Savage and five points from Kimmy Petty got the Braves out to a 10-0 start. After a basket from TV’s Tessa Horsley, Kiki Ingram closed out the quarter with a three for a 13-2 LE lead. Three threes from Ingram and eight points from Petty in the second quarter helped the Braves to a 32-9 halftime advantage.

With Teays Valley moving to the Ohio Capital Conference this season, LE coach Mike Schultz said he was looking forward to not having the challenge of the Vikings on his schedule this season after having been on the losing end of the last six matchups. But that was before planning for the Brad Morris Holiday Classic started.

“I was extremely pleased with how we started controlling the offense. But when you give up nine points to a Teays Valley team with a veteran coaching staff and a lot of solid players on their team, that’s what I was most proud of,” he said. “We know what we’re capable of. We saw glimpses of it today. It all didn’t look perfect, but it looked pretty good.”

“I want the credit to go to Logan Elm. They’re battling and have great guards,” TV coach Trevor Younkin said. “I feel like our guards didn’t show up today to their full potential.

“The first quarter has been getting us. We’ve been down a couple of times in the first quarter and now we’ve got to dig out of a hole.”

The Vikings came out in the second half, forced some turnovers and chipped away at LE’s lead coming as close as 36-25 after a three from Amelia Brumfield, but the third period ended with the Braves up 41-25.

“At halftime, I told them there’s not much Xs and Os we can put on the board, you have to have a fight in you,” Younkin said. “They showed that in the second half – a little bit of a fight, a little bit of getting on the floor, getting loose balls and being in the passing lanes. It’s stuff we’ve asked them to do and have done well but we just didn’t do it in the first half.”

A pair of threes from Ingram and a pair of free throws from Petty put the Braves up 49-27 three minutes into the final quarter, effectively ending TV’s comeback hopes.

“We talked about at halftime that they’re going to have to start pressing us more and play with a lot bigger of a sense of urgency,” Schultz said. “When they started coming, I don’t think we were necessarily ready for it, but we started making the adjustments.”

Ingram led the Braves with 23 points and Petty had 15.

“Our guard play was solid. Kimmy and Kiki, they’re just solid players and any coach in the world would want to have them on their team,” Schultz said. “We’ve been able to get Kennedy (Groff) back and now she’s healthy and (Gillian Savage) is back to being healthy and then we get contributors with Molly (Miller) and Maddie (Adkins) stepping in, that’s what helps us. We’re not big by any stretch of the imagination, but we showed we can be tough.”

LE finished with a 32-22 rebounding advantage with Wilson grabbing nine and Groff seven.

“Maggie Wilson, I don’t know how many rebounds she ended with, but that was one of the biggest reasons in that first half that we were able to keep that lead is we were only giving up one shot,” Schultz said.
