Wright has big senior night as Mustangs down Piketon

WILLIAMSPORT — Senior night went pretty well for Westfall and running back Joey Wright as he ran in four scores and threw for another in a 53-21 win over Piketon Friday.

The Mustangs’ running back accounted for more than 300 yards of offense.

On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Wright took the ball 64 yards to the endzone.

Westfall’s third series started after the Red Streaks mishandled a punt snap to give the Mustang a short field. On the third play, Wright took a strong hit near the goal line but fought through for a five-yard score.

The next possession began around midfield and Wright carried the ball on five of the six plays with the last tote covering 12 yards. Carson Deskin’s third PAT kick had Westfall up 21-0 early in the second.

While Wright picked up 52 more yards on the next series, it was Quinn Eberly going the last five for a TD. A problem on the PAT snap left the score at 27-0 with just under a minute left in the half.

Piketon connected on a short pass on first down, but three straight incompletions gave the ball back to Westfall at Piketon’s 41 with 23 seconds left.

Wright took the pitch on first down, pulled up and found Landen Sparks running behind the defense. Sparks caught the pass and took it to the endzone. The PAT kick hit the upright leaving Westfall up 33-0 with 15 seconds showing.

While the Red Streaks had struggled to get any sustained offense in the first half, they did strike right before the half as Imond Leslie grabbed the kickoff off a bounce and raced 61 yards for a score to make Westfall’s lead 33-7 at the break.

Piketon scored midway through the third to close to 33-14, but Westfall touchdowns from Eli Wright (17-yard run), Eberly (9-yard run) and Joey Wright (32-yard run) in the fourth quarter secured a Mustangs’ win.

Joey Wright ran for 178 of his 291 rushing yards in the first half while having the one pass for 41 yards and caught one ball for four. He also had four tackles and assisted on 14 more.

Eli Wright had eight carries for 57 and Eberly had nine runs for 32. Eberly was 3-4 passing for 17 yards.

After only 122 yards of offense in the first half, Piketon ended the night with 304.

The win keeps Westfall (6-3, 4-2) tied for third in the SVC standings and keeps a chance at the postseason alive. The Mustangs need to pull the upset when they head south to battle an unbeaten Unioto squad next Friday.
