Tigers in control of MSL; Braves drop Aces; Vikings fall in double-header with Newark

Circleville 56, Fairfield Union 33

WEST RUSHVILLE — With control of the Mid-State League’s Buckeye Division on the line, Circleville picked up a big road win 56-33 at Fairfield Union Saturday night. 

Circleville now holds a one-game lead over the Falcons with another MSL contest against Fairfield Union, along with games against Hamilton Township and Liberty Union remaining.  

With 13 points from senior Kole Nungester, the Tigers jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and extended that to 29-13 by halftime. 

Circleville didn’t let up as the Tigers had 17-10 advantage in the third period to hold a 46-23 lead. 

Nungester finished the night as the game’s top scorer with 23 points. 

Blain Fowler and Riley Jenkins each added 10 points, Jack Kline had five with Glavine Bigam and Ed Kirk each scoring four. 

Maison Ailes led FU with 12 points, Keaton Webb had seven, Asa Kline and Drake DeFazio each had six and Dean Clark added two. 

Circleville (15-2, 8-1) and Fairfield Union (12-5, 7-2) meet again at Circleville on Feb. 17.

Logan Elm 54, Amanda-Clearcreek 34

CIRCLEVILLE — Logan Elm connected on five three-pointers in the third quarter on the way to a 55-34 win over visiting Amanda-Clearcreek Saturday night. 

The Braves had a good start in getting out to a 12-4 lead after the first but added only six in the second while maintaining an 18-13 lead at the half. 

The Aces scored the first three points of the second half to close to within two points before a three from Owen Russell, a free throw from Austin Holbrook and a three from Brady Neff made it 25-16 in favor of the Braves and LE held a 34-25 lead at the end of the quarter. 

It was 40-32 three minutes into the fourth when Logan Elm scored the next 15 points to seal up the win.

Owen Russell led the Braves with 15 points. 

Carter Madison had 14 and Nick Holland had 13 for the Aces.

The Braves (9-10, 6-4) will host Hamilton Township Tuesday while the Aces (3-17, 1-10) head to Bloom-Carroll that night.

Newark 49, Teays Valley 44 (girls)

ASHVILLE — Newark flipped the script on host Teays Valley to pick up a 49-44 win Saturday night. 

The Vikings had gotten out to a 30-18 halftime lead only to have the Wildcats win the third quarter 17-6 to cut TV’s lead to 36-35.

The Vikings were within a point heading into the final minute but couldn’t get the needed shot to fall.

Tessa Horsley led Teays Valley with 15 points while Cami Robins and Areyana Karshner each added nine. 

The Vikings (12-6, 9-3) host Logan Tuesday. 

Newark 73, Teays Valley 39 (boys)

ASHVILLE — Newark showed why it is considered one of the favorites to make the state’s Division I final four as it topped Teays Valley 73-39 Saturday night. 

The Vikings trailed by two (14-12) after the first quarter before the Wildcats started to pull away in the second to lead 28-19 at the half. 

A 26-12 third quarter pushed the Newark advantage to 54-31.

The Vikings (8-10, 3-8) host Groveport-Madison Monday night. Newark (19-1, 12-0) has league games with Lancaster and Reynoldsburg the next two Fridays.
