Tigers advance past Mustangs; Braves down Vinton County

Southeast District, Division IV
No. 9 Circleville 18, No. 8 Westfall 5 (6 innings)

WILLIAMSPORT — Circleville used a big second inning to flip the scoreboard on the way to beating host Westfall 18-5 in six innings to advance in the Southeast District Division IV tournament. 

The Mustangs had taken a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Circleville responded in the second.

Miles Rickard had reached on a one-out single. When Coulsen Mathews lined out to short, Rickard got back to first ahead of the throw to avoid an inning-ending double play. Cailen Johnson then walked and Glavine Bigam reached on an error to load the bases.

Zack Bell walked in a run, Kiser Cassidy singled to drive in two and Hudson Phalin singled in two more. Jack Kline followed with a single and then Chase Foster hit a two-run double to give the Tigers a 7-5 advantage.

Bigam had an RBI double in the third and Phalin had a two-out single to drive in three more for a 10-5 lead. 

Circleville opened the fifth with a pair of walks and Phalin singled to drive in a run. Kline followed with a sacrifice fly to score another run for a 12-5 lead. 

A six-run sixth sealed the deal for the Tigers. 

Bigam had a two-run double, Cassidy had an RBI single, Kline drove in two with a double and Foster added an RBI single.

Neither starting pitcher fared well on Tuesday. 

Bell had the start for Circleville and lasted a third of an inning in giving up three earned before Foster took the mound. Foster went 4.2 to get the win with four strikeouts and no walks. Kiser pitched one inning and struck out two. 

Cash Conrad started and took the loss for the Mustangs. He lasted two-thirds into the second and gave up seven unearned runs. Caleb Lowe went 2.1 innings and gave up five earned runs. Brendan Biegler pitched the final two innings and allowed six earned.

Phalin had five RBI for the Tigers while Bigam, Cassidy, Kline and Foster each had three. 

Westfall’s five-run first featured RBI-singles from Conrad and AJ Pluta, a two-run double from Caleb Henry and an RBI-single from Brody Beigler. 

The Mustangs finish the season with an 11-11 record. 

Circleville (13-14) advances to Ohio University Saturday morning where the Tigers will face No. 1 seed Fairfield Union (19-5) at 11 a.m.

No. 7 Logan Elm 11, No. 10 Vinton County 2

CIRCLEVILLE — Logan Elm got the lead early and never let Vinton County into the game as the Braves advanced 11-2 Tuesday afternoon. 

A two-out single from Zane Seimer scored a run for LE in the first. 

A ground out plated another run for the Braves in the second. 

Vinton County plated a run in the top of the fourth and then Brice Swicegood opened LE’s half of the inning with a triple.

Three straight walks forced in a run for the Braves and Brady Neff doubled to plate two more. 

The Braves opened their half of the fifth with three walks to load the bases. A run scored on a fielder’s choice and Zane Seimer singled in two more. Two more walks loaded the bases and then Kelton Bennington singled in another run for a 9-1 LE lead. 

Vinton County (13-10) added another run in the sixth.

LE capped the game’s scoring with an RBI single from Swicegood and a run scoring on an error in the bottom of the sixth.

Seimer went six innings on the mound to get the win for the Braves. He gave up two earned runs on five hits, with two walks and he struck out five. 

The Braves (13-10) advance to Saturday’s district semifinal against No. 2 Unioto (18-9) at Paints Stadium at the Chillicothe VA. First pitch is slated for 1:30.
