Braves one-hit top-seeded Shermans

No. 7 Logan Elm 4, No. 2 Unioto 1

CHILLICOTHE — Logan Elm scored three times in the third inning on the way to upsetting top-seeded Unioto 4-1 Saturday and advancing to a Southeast District Division IV title game.

Unioto was on the board first with a leadoff walk from Blake Sanders in the second who would come around to score on a two-out single from David Long. Long’s single turned out to be Unioto’s only hit Saturday.

After that second inning, the Shermans managed only two more base runners on a fifth-inning walk and an error in the seventh.

The Braves answered Unioto’s second-inning run by coming back in the top of the third to hit three straight singles (Lucas Bialy, Brady Neff and Blake Summers) which were followed by a two-run double off the bat of Kelton Bennington. Following a strikeout, Summers scored on a groundout to make it 3-1.

LE added an insurance run in the seventh. Neff hit a two-out single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Summers. Bennington was given an intentional walk and then Cam Ebert singled to right to bring Summers around.

Neff went five innings on the mound to get the win as he gave up the one unearned run on one hit with two walks and he struck out five. Bennington came on to finish out the game. He struck out two in two innings of work.

Ebert had three hits for the Braves while Neff and Summers each had two.

The Shermans end their season with an 18-10 record bookended by losses to the Braves as the two teams faced each other in game one back in March with LE winning that matchup 3-1.

The Braves (14-10) return to the Chillicothe VA Tuesday to take on No. 3 Wheelersburg for a district title. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. Wheelersburg (16-11) advanced with a 9-3 win over Washington Court House.
