Wednesday’s roundup: Aces, Braves advance in sectional finals

Hello Cinderella.
The Logan Elm softball team entered the Division II Southeast District tournament seeded 11th out of 19 schools, but don’t tell Waverly and Hillsboro that.
After the Braves opened tournament play with a 13-3 run-rule win over sixth-seeded Waverly on Monday, they never trailed on Wednesday as they knocked off third-seeded and host Hillsboro 5-4 in a sectional final.
The Braves (12-9) will continue their road trip on Monday with a district semifinal against second-seeded Athens (23-5).
Logan Elm struck first on Wednesday against Frontier Athletic Conference champion Hillsboro by scoring four runs in the second inning, all with two outs.
Jacie Clifton opened the second with a double to left and advanced to third on a single off the bat of Carly King.
Carlee Reed then drew a walk to load the bases. Following a lineout and strikeout, Lynsay Vanhoose smacked a triple to right to drive in all three runners and make it 3-0 Braves.
Callena Wiget then laced a double to center to bring in Vanhoose.
Hillsboro (20-5) chipped away with a run in its half of the first and two more in the fifth to shave the Logan Elm advantage to 4-3, but the Braves were able to score an insurance run in their final at-bat, again with two outs.
Wiget opened the seventh with a single to right and advanced on a sacrifice by Cheyenne Arnold. After a pop out, Clifton singled to center to drive in Wiget and make it 5-3 Braves.
King sat down the Indians 1-2-3 in the home seventh, allowing the Braves to advance through sectional play.
Wiget led the Braves by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Clifton went a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.
Avree Entler tossed the front four innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs to claim the win. King earned the save by throwing three scoreless frames, allowing two hits and striking out three.

The A-C senior walked one batter and struck out nine in the 99-pitch outing.
Amanda-Clearcreek jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first.
Carly Singleton singled to left to lead off the bottom of the first and scored an out later when Logann Julian smacked a double to center. Alford then brought around Julian on a single to center.
The Aces went ahead 3-0 in the third when Alford singled and courtesy runner Faith Jewell eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Liberty Hopper.
Bishop Ready scored its lone run in the fourth, but the Aces got the run back in their half of the frame on a sacrifice fly to center by Singleton that score Shyanne Miller, who had reached earlier in the inning on a single to right.
The Aces went on to tack on two more runs in the fifth.
