Falcons best Vikings in MSL girls meet, BC on top in boys’ championships

ASHVILLE — It came down to the final events to determine what schools would claim trophies Friday in the Mid-State League Buckeye Division Track and Field Championships.

Fairfield Union and Teays Valley were tied with only two events left in the girls’ meet. The Falcons finished first and fourth in the 3,200 meters and second in the 1,600 relay to pull away from the Vikings for a 151-140 margin of victory. Circleville was third with 118.5 points, Logan Elm was sixth with 61 and Amanda-Clearcreek was seventh with 30 points. 

The boys’ meet wasn’t quite as tight heading into the final races, but the title was still up in the air as Bloom-Carroll was on top of Liberty Union by only 9.5 points. 

The Bulldogs added enough points to keep the Lions at bay and take the title 124.5-118. Logan Elm was fifth with 88 points, Teays Valley was sixth with 79, Circleville was seventh with 37 and Amanda-Clearcreek was eighth with 16.

In fifth after Tuesday’s field events, Circleville’s girls won six of the 11 races Friday to move up to third. 

A core of speedsters led the Tigers. 

Faith Yancey won the 100 and 200 meter races and was part of the winning 800-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams. 

Lily Winter won the 400 meters, was second in the 200 and was on the two winning relays.

Ellie Patrick won the 800 and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team.

Addison Lowe was on the two winning relays and was fourth in the 400. 

Makya Cockerham rounded out the winning 800-meter relay squad.

Other top performers included Circleville’s Maddux Bigam taking second in the 3,200 meters, TV’s Denajah Smith taking second in the 100-meter hurdles, TV’s Ryleigh McCoy placing second in the 400 and TV’s McCoy, Lauren Sharrock, Olivia Knox and Kaitlyn Stiffler finishing second in the 800-meter relay.

In the boys’ meet, Bloom-Carroll came out on top despite their only two event titles coming in Tuesday’s field events. The Bulldogs did place second in five races Friday to stay ahead of the competition.

Locally, Logan Elm claimed three league titles Friday. 

Jude Braun won the 400 meters.

Braun joined Allen Boerner, Anthony Steele and Mason Carpenter to win the 800-meter relay. 

Drew Tomlinson joined Boerner, Braun and Carpenter to end the meet with a win in the 1,600-meter relay.

Among other top performances from local athletes, Tomlinson was second in the 300-meter hurdles, LE’s Nate Edge was third in the 110-meter hurdles, TV’s Connor Dean was third in the 800, TV’s Joey Williams was third in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters, and TV’s Troy Bellisari, Robbie Scott, Griffin Gray and Richard Odum were third in the 400-meter relay.
