Scioto Valley Conference co-champion Zane Trace pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of 11 Westfall errors to score nine unearned runs on Thursday to run-rule the visiting Mustangs 13-3 in a Division III Southeast District sectional final.
The Pioneers, ranked second in the state, scored four runs in the first and four in the second to take an 8-1 lead. Westfall attempted to fight back with two runs in the third, but the Pioneers eventually countered with three more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to complete the run-rule win.
It was the third time this season that the Pioneers (23-3) defeated the Mustangs on the diamond.
Trent Walters went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs and Ashton Nunemaker was 2-for-2 and scored. Bryant Coker singled and drove in all three runs for the Mustangs (10-15).
