Mustangs use second half run to rout Huntsmen

Westfall scored the first 14 points of the second half on Tuesday to take charge of a Scioto Valley Conference game and roll past visiting Huntington 68-44.

The Mustangs opened the night with a 16-13 lead after a period of play.

Seth Gifford led the way early for the Mustangs with three field goals for six points.

Casey Cline tallied six points and Jeremiah Layton added four in the second quarter, as the Mustangs expanded their advantage to 30-24.

“We struggled shooting the ball in the first half but because of second chance and transition points we were able to stay in-front at the half,” Westfall coach Christian Meister said. “Foul trouble plagued us in the first half and our bench came up huge. Brydan Gall played big minutes tonight and played well. Before rolling his ankle Isaiah Browning came up big for us, as well.”

Westfall took charge with a 20-point third quarter that saw four players contribute to the scoring. Gifford and Cline each scored three baskets for six points and Brody Clark matched their six points with a pair of triples.

Westfall’s Brody Clark, seen here in a game last week, had 12 points in a win on Tuesday over Huntington. Check out more Westfall basketball photos.

“Our guys listened well at half and followed adjustments, starting the second half on a 14-0,” Meister said. “The unselfishness of our group is really starting to show in this three-game win streak.

“It could be anyone’s night to score based on matchup. Tonight, was Seth Gifford’s night based on matchup and he played extremely well. He is a guy who does all the dirty work behind the scenes, and I couldn’t be happier to see him have a night like this.”

On defense, the Mustangs held the Huntsmen to just a pair of field goals during the quarter to take a 50-31 lead into the final period of play.

The Mustangs received contributions from both their post and backcourt in the win. Gifford led all scorers with 17 points, Cline tallied 16 and Clark added 12.

Caiden Stewart tallied 14 points and Noah Potter added 10 for the Huntsmen (0-7, 0-5).

The Mustangs (5-3, 4-1) travel to Circleville for the Horizon Holiday Classic on Dec. 28 and 30. Westfall is slated to play New Hope Christian in the first game at 5:30 p.m.
