Vikings increase pace in second half to defeat Tigers

Teays Valley turned up the tempo of a Mid-State League Buckeye Division game on Thursday to score 38 second half points and defeat host Circleville 64-44.

“I felt like we came out with energy to start the game, made a few nice plays, but foul trouble early in the second quarter hurt us,” Circleville coach Cody Carpenter said. “Right now, we do not have the rotation for certain guys to get into foul trouble.

“Teays Valley did a nice job of pushing the basketball in the third quarter and our transition defense struggled.”

The Vikings entered the half with a 26-18 lead and nearly surpassed their first half production with a 21-point third quarter.

Brody Fields led the way during the run with eight points, Sam Miller had six and Kole Nungester added five, as the Vikings expanded their advantage to as much as 20 points in the period before settling for a 47-29 advantage going into the fourth.

Fields tallied seven points in the final period and Nungester added two more field goals to put the finishing touches on the Vikings’ fifth league win of the season.

Fields poured in a game-high 20 points, 15 of which came in the second half to lead the Vikings, and Miller and Nungester added 12 apiece.

Briley Cramer had 12 of his 14 points during the second half to pace the Tigers, Slater Search had seven of his eight in the first quarter and Preston Hulse also scored eight for the Tigers.

Circleville (4-4, 2-3) hosts the Horizon Holiday Classic on Dec. 28. New Hope and Westfall play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Tigers taking on Athens.

Teays Valley (5-2, 5-0) is off for a week until it travels to Upper Arlington for a non-league game on Dec. 30.
