Circleville sophomore Maddux Bigam is slated to make her first appearance in the state track and field championships on Saturday when she runs in the 1600 at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Bigam finished fourth last Saturday with a season-best time of 5:12.79 in the one-mile run at a Division II regional held at Muskingum University.
Bigam has experience competing at the state’s highest level, as the sophomore is a two-time state qualifier in cross country.
Question: Take us through your strategy running the 1600 last week in a regional meet, how you felt entering the race and qualifying for the state championships?
Answer: It was pretty nerve wracking coming into the race, however I reminded myself of all the training I’ve put in leading up to this. My strategy coming into the race was to stick with (Fairfield Union’s) Anna Conrad and (Unioto’s) Cameron Walker.

Question: Do you feel like you are peaking at the right time in the 1600?
Answer: I definitely feel like I am peaking at the right time in the 1600. My times earlier this year were consistently in the 5:20’s to 5:19.
Question: What does your training regimen look like, both practice wise and then on your own to be an elite runner?
Answer: I do a variety of speed work, long intervals, and endurance runs in the summer and winter to prepare for my seasons.
Question: What are your goals for the state championships?
Answer: My goals for state are to break 5:10 and to have fun. I am so excited and grateful to be racing at Ohio State.
