Mustangs excited about depth

Westfall Mustangs Boys Cross Country

Coach: Austin Ridenour

2022 finish: Second in Scioto Valley Conference, Regional Qualifier

Key returnees: Junior Josh Trapp (All-SVC and District), senior Henry Barnes (All-SVC), junior Trent Gardner (All-SVC), junior Brody Williams (All-District), senior Brody Clark (All-SVC), sophomore Mason Barnes, junior Nate Wolfe

Key newcomers: Sophomore Isaac Bebb

Key losses: Wayne Kitchen

Coach’s comments: We bring back our top six runners and nine of the top 10. We will have good depth this year and the athletes will have another year of running under their belt. Our best strength will be the pack we have up front with our top 5-6 runners. The closer they are together the more they can push each other and, it always harder to beat a team like that.

One improvement I think we need to make it to improve our strength running hills. In Pickaway County, especially near Westfall, there aren’t a ton of hills around us, so we have to get a little creative.

Westfall’s Caitlyn Shipley is a three-time returning state qualifier.

Westfall Mustangs Girls Cross Country

Coach: Austin Ridenour

2022 finish: Third in Scioto Valley Conference

Key returnees: Senior Caitlyn Shipley (All-SVC and District, three-time state qualifier), senior Anay Sierra (All-SVC), junior Gabby Henry (All-SVC), senior Natalie Yates, senior Makalie Crabtree, junior Reese Paudicz

Key newcomers: Freshman Elleana Yaeger

Key losses: None

Coach’s comments: With four seniors and two juniors leading our top six, we will have better depth and strength this year. And the team is always strong with Caitlyn Shipley and Anay Sierra leading from the front. One thing to improve is the same as the boys team. Just need to get stronger running hills and work on our overall strength.
