COLUMBUS — The event was Battle in the 614 at Ohio Dominican University, but Teays Valley represented the 740 well as it beat St. Francis DeSales 40-30 Saturday afternoon.
The opening score was made by DeSales’ Kanyetietta Quinn on a hard drive to the basket for a tough-earned two. Teays Valley answered with a left-side drive by Tessa Horsley, followed by consecutive Alyssa Horsley baskets that would draw the Vikings ahead 6-2.
The Vikings added points when Horsley was fouled on a drive to convert a three-point play and Addie Helwagen added a basket to help the Vikings to an 11-7 lead after the first quarter.
A low scoring second quarter saw the Vikings add baskets from Alyssa Horsley and Tessa Horsley along with a free throw from Watkins while DeSales managed only six points from Quinn as TV held a 16-13 lead at the half.
TV had a good start to the second half with Abby Tier blocking a shot, and an assist from Alyssa Horsley on a Watkins’ three-pointer made the score 19-13.
The Vikings added a three-point play from Tessa Horsley and baskets from Addie Helwagen and Cooper McManaway in the period to hold a 26-21 lead entering the final quarter.
The final quarter started with a DeSales turnover that the Vikings traded in for an Alyssa Horsley basket. An Alyssa Horsley assist on a Tessa Horsley basket gave the Vikings a bigger cushion.
Tessa Horsley finished the night with 12 points to lead the Vikings.
“Tessa is so active around the basket, and her sister found her and the great thing is they play well together,” TV coach Trevor Younkin said.
The Vikings were able to hit eight of 12 free throws in the final two minutes to hold off the Stallions.
Tier hit five of six and Kennedy Younkin hit three of four. Both had five points on the night.
Alyssa Horsley finished with eight points.
“We were able to come here and refocus and had some girls step up. We had seven players score tonight and I was proud of our response and effort,” Younkin said.
Scoring all of her team’s points in the second and third quarters, Quinn had 22 points for DeSales.
The Vikings (3-3) host Hamilton Township Tuesday.
