ASHVILLE — Fairfield Union did it’s best to erase a 16-point Teays Valley lead in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings held on for a 62-58 win Saturday night.

The Falcons missed a couple uncontested layups to start the game and the Vikings finished the first quarter with a 15-11 lead. At halftime, TV’s lead was 31-25.

A 10-10 third quarter left the Vikings up 41-35.

The Vikings got back-to-back threes from Brody Fields, a steal and a layup from Kole Nungester along with four points from Sam Miller to go up 53-37 with five minutes left in the game.

The Falcons (5-1, 2-1) battled back to tighten the deficit but were unable to catch up to their hosts as the Vikings hit 11 of 12 fee throws in the period.

Fields led the Vikings with 20 points, Nungester had 17 and Miller and Luke Burgett each had 11.

Along with his 17 points, Nungester had 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists.

“Kole played his best game of the season tonight, he is really starting to come on and we are looking for big things from him as we go through the season,” TV coach Brian Barnett said. “Kole did a great job of handling the ball for us and getting us into our offense.

“I thought Luke played a solid game tonight. He is starting to look to score a little more and did a nice job on the defensive end,” Barnett added. “Sam got into a little foul trouble tonight but came out in the second half and played solid on the offensive end.”

Cavin McDowell had the Vikings’ other three points Saturday and gave the team some valuable minutes on the defensive end. “Defensively Cavin gives us a lift, his quickness causes other teams trouble on the offensive end,” Barnett said.

Caleb Schmelzer led the Falcons with 23 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists.

Teays Valley (4-1, 3-0) will host Circleville Friday.
