Teays Valley laid claim to its fifth straight Mid-State League wrestling championship Friday night.
The Vikings piled up 193.5 points with Bloom-Carroll taking second at 161. Circleville was third with 158 points, Logan Elm was fourth with 150 and Amanda-Clearcreek was fifth with 120.5.
Teays Valley had just two individual champions but also had four wrestlers take second and four more place third.
Unlike some of the past teams that were loaded with veterans, this year’s Vikings squad had a number of unproven wrestlers.
“We have no seniors on the team,” TV coach Todd Nace said. “These young kids came in and at the beginning of the year we had eight or nine kids who had never wrestled a varsity match before. They’re here now getting third place at this league, or second. Tyler Tietz had never wrestled a match until this year. He’s a junior and came out and got second place.”
TV’s individual titles came at 120 pounds where Josh Zimmer won a 9-7 decision over Fairfield Union’s James Worthington and at heavyweight where Tristin Graham pinned Bloom-Carroll’s Trystan Ruckman.
Second place finishers included John Todhunter at 106, Aiden Kennedy at 157, Ethan Schwalbauch at 175 and Tietz at 215.
“It was a total team effort,” Nace said. “The kids just buy in to what we’re doing and the kids are working hard. We might have 12, 13 losses on some of our records but that’s who we wrestle against.
“I think we got beat twice by kids that we came back in third place matches and beat. We’re just a good team right now with young kids.”
Circleville had two champions with Jacob Johnson winning a 9-5 decision over Bloom-Carroll’s Levi Kline to take the 132-pound title and Noah Jones won a 10-2 major decision over Logan Elm’s Bryce Perkins to win at 165 pounds.
The host Tigers also had one wrestler finish second, two third and four place fourth.
Logan Elm had two wrestlers win titles. Dawson Hudson won a 17-6 major decision over Bloom-Carroll’s Ethan Moor to take the title at 113 pounds and Gavin Hoover pinned Circleville’s Jon Perez for the 126-pound championship.
The Braves had one wrestle place second, three take third and three more place fourth.
Amanda-Clearcreek had Bodie Martin and Peyton Beavers each win a title. Martin pinned Hamilton Township’s Jesse Ferrell to win at 150 pounds and Beavers won a 7-1 decision over Teays Valley’s Aiden Kenedy at 157.
AC had two more wrestlers place second, two were third and one took fourth.
Teays Valley’s wrestlers have brought quite a few MSL championship trophies back to their school over the years, but this will be the last one as the Vikings head to the Ohio Capital Conference next season.
“I’ve spent a lot of time here in the Mid-State League,” said Nace, who’s been involved with TV wrestling for three decades. “I think we have a pretty good Mid-State League program all over. It’s built up and maybe we were part of that. People started chasing us, I think the teams got better. So I’m really proud of the Mid-State League and real happy to be part of that.”
The league championships wrap up the regular season for the teams and they now turn their attention to the post season. A few are still participating in the state team duals tournament but they all will be in action in two weeks when sectional tournaments are held on the 24th.
