Miller, Zoellick earn spots in state tournament

LEWIS CENTER — Girls around the state were in competition Sunday vying for spots in next weekend’s state championships.
Sky Zoellick and Ava Miller were able to earn a spot for Teays Valley.

Zoellick took second in the 140-pound weight class. The freshman pinned her way to the finals winning her matches in 1:30, 1:44 and 3:45. In the championship match she was pinned by Gahanna Lincoln’s KyLee Tibbs in 2:36.

Teays Valley senior Miller is making a return trip to the state tournament after taking fourth at 110 pounds. Miller advanced by pinning her first two opponents in the first round before losing her semifinal by pin. She advanced to the consolation finals with a second-round pin before losing in the consolation finals to New Philadelphia’s Easton Miller. 

TV’s Lidia Huntley placed fifth at 125 pounds. The sophomore won her first two matches with pins before losing her semifinal by pin in the first round. She then lost in the consolation semifinals 3-2 before winning the fifth-place match with a pin in 1:28.

Four other Pickaway County wrestlers competed at the regional meet held at Olentangy Orange High School. 

At 115 pounds, TV’s Mackenzie Stevenson went 2-2. She won her opener with a 13-second pin before losing a 10-7 decision. She came back with a pin in the consolations only to lose a 14-13 decision in the quarterfinals. 

TV’s Brianna Grambo, competing at 135 pounds, won her opening match with a pin at 1:58 but lost her next match getting pinned in 2:59 and had her season ended getting pinned in 2:53.

TV’s Hallie Dunaway competed at 155 pounds losing both her matches.

Circleville was represented by Makaylee Holbrook competing at 100 pounds. The freshman won her opener with a pin of Olentangy Orange’s Adri Metzler but lost a 5-2 decision in the second round. In the consolation bracket, she advanced with a pin before her season was ended with a 3-2 loss in the consolation quarterfinals.

Wrestling begins Friday at 1 p.m. for Division III boys with the girls matches expected to start around 5 p.m.
