10 area wrestlers qualify for state tournament

The area will be represented by 10 wrestlers when the boys state championships kick off Friday at Ohio State. 

In Division I, Teays Valley’s Carson Hix and Josh Zimmer will be competing. Division II has Logan Elm’s Conner Green, Gavin Hoover and Dawson Hudson. Division III will have Amanda-Clearcreek’s Jacob Durr and Bodie Martin along with Westfall’s Gage Bolt, Brady Speakman and Bryce Wickline.

GALLIPOLIS — Logan Elm is taking three wrestlers to the state tournament following action at the Division II tournament hosted by Gallia Academy over the weekend. 

Dawson Hudson, Gavin Hoover and Conner Green all will be headed to Ohio State next weekend to compete. 

Hudson (42-3) took third at 113 pounds for the Braves. After going 1-1 Friday, he came back with a pin in 1:56, a 5-4 decision and won a 12-2 major decision to get in the consolation finals where he beat Claymont’s Daniel McGarr 16-12.  

Hoover (47-5), competing at 126 pounds, also finished third and will be making a return trip to the state tournament. 

After a 1-1 effort Friday, he came back with pins in 4:40 and 4:41 before winning a 6-0 decision to get to the consolation finals. He took third by beating Carrollton’s Levi Pidgeon 2-0.

Conner Green (30-18) won both of his heavyweight matches on Friday night but was pinned in the second round of his championship semifinal Saturday afternoon. He came back to win a 1-0 decision to get to the consolation finals where he lost a 7-3 decision to Brady Rohrer from Washington Court House to finish fourth.  

Jacob Johnson was the top finisher for Circleville. The 132-pounder placed sixth. 

After going 1-1 on Friday, he came back Saturday winning by pin in 1:13 and 56 seconds before losing his consolation semifinal 5-3 and then lost the fifth-place match 8-6. 

Steubenville won the tournament with 112 points, edging out Carrollton which had 111.5. Logan Elm finished 14th with 56.5 and Circleville was 30th with 19 points.

Hix, Zimmer on to state for Vikings

HILLIARD — Teays Valley is taking a pair of wrestlers to the state tournament after competing in the Division I district tournament at Hilliard Darby High School over the weekend. 

Josh Zimmer and Carson Hix will be representing the Vikings. 

Zimmer finished third at 120 pounds. 

After winning his two matches Friday night, Zimmer (33-7) was defeated in his championship semifinal 5-2 but came back to advance to the consolation finals with a 10-2 major decision and then beat Preston Schuler from Olentangy 4-2 to take third.

Hix took fourth for the Vikings at 113 pounds. 

Hix (29-11) won his two Friday night matches but was pinned in the first round of his championship semifinal. He came back to advance to the consolation final with a 5-3 decision but lost a 6-4 match to finish fourth. 

Ethan Schwalbauch, competing at 175 pounds, went 1-1 on Friday and came back Saturday to win a 15-2 major decision before losing by pin in the conso semis. He took fifth place with a pin of Hilliard Bradley’s Ian Wagner, the same wrestler he beat in the first round. 

Heavyweight Tristian Graham also took fifth for the Vikings. 

After going 1-1 on Friday, he came back with a pair of pins on Saturday but lost a 4-2 decision in the semifinals. He pinned Hilliard Darby’s Brandon Weaver in 2:11 to finish fifth. 

Dublin Coffman won the district title with 237.5 points with Olentany Liberty second with 216.5 and Olentangy third at 110.5. Teays Valley was sixth with 76 points.

Five area wrestlers qualify to state in Division III

HEATH — With a second-place finish, Westfall’s Gage Bolt leads a group of five area wrestlers who have earned a spot in next weekend’s Division III state championships. 

Joining Bolt will be teammates Brady Speakman and Bryce Wickline and Amanda-Clearcreek’s Jacob Durr and Bodie Martin who each placed fourth in their weight classes. 

Barnesville won seven weight classes and took second in another to win the Division III district tournament at Heath with 245.5 points while Northmor was a distant second with 104.5. Westfall accumulated 72 points – good for seventh – and Amanda-Clearcreek was 13th with 47.5 points.

Bolt’s second-place finish at 165 pounds earns him his second trip to the state championships. Bolt (34-5) began his tournament Friday night pinning his first opponent in 5:02 and then recorded a 10-1 major decision. Saturday afternoon, he advanced to the finals with a 7-3 win over Malvern’s Tyson Clear. 

He ran up against Barnesville’s Ayden King (48-5) in the finals where he lost a 1-0 decision. 

After going 1-1 Friday, Speakman came back at 106 pounds Saturday advancing with a pin in 3:38, a pin in 2:29 and advanced to the consolation finals by forfeit. He then lost a 5-3 decision to Northmor’s Carter Thomas to place fourth. 

AC’s Durr (26-16) went 1-1 Friday and came back Saturday with a pin in 4:28, a 13-6 decision and advance to the finals with a 13-8 decision but lost to Northmor’s Ethan Amens 9-4 in the finals to place fourth at 120 pounds. 

After making it to the state tournament last year as an alternate, AC’s Martin (37-5) earned his trip by placing fourth at 144 pounds. 

After going 1-1 Friday, the sophomore won a 15-3 major decision, advanced with a pin in 4:58 and made it to the consolation semifinals with a 6-2 decision before losing an 8-2 match to Union Local’s Gunnar Gossett. 

Wickline is returning to the state tournament after placing fourth Saturday at 175 pounds. 

After going 1-1 Friday night, Wickline (30-7) advanced to the consolation finals with 4-3, 3-1 and 8-2 decisions. He lost the finals match 9-4 in overtime to Huntington’s Morgan Breniser, whom he beat 6-5 in extra time in last week’s sectional championship match.

Amanda-Clearcreek’s Peyton Beavers was looking for a return trip to Ohio State for the championships after winning his two opening matches on Friday but ended up fifth.  

The 157-pounder lost his championship semifinal match 11-0 to eventual champion Skyler King from Barnesville and then lost his consolation semifinal 5-4 before bouncing back to take fifth with a 7-3 win over Garaway’s Matt Frey.
