District tournaments underway across the state

HEATH — A pair of Westfall wrestlers and one from Amanda-Clearcreek got off to a 2-0 start at the Division III district tournament at Heath High School. 

For the Mustangs, freshman Bryson Campfield opened with a 9-5 decision over Aydan Andrews from Barnesville and then pinned Jase Mahoney from Martins Ferry in 5:07, and senior Gage Bolt pinned Gabriel Lamneck in 5:02 and won a 10-1 major decision over Waterford’s Colten Jones. 

Amanda-Clearcreek’s Peyton Beavers won his 100th career match when he opened with a 17-0 tech fall over Wellston’s Mason Collins and won his 101st with a 4-2 overtime decision against Northmor’s Carson Campbell.

Winning their opener but dropping into the consolation bracket for Westfall were Brady Speakman (106) and Bryce Wickline (175). 

For the Aces, Jacob Durr (120), Rees Lown (132) and Bodie Martin (144) each won their opener before dropping their quarterfinal. 

Losing their opening match and dropping into the consolation bracket were AC’s Kyle Kougher (138) and Westfall’s Noah Furniss (113), Bo Williams (126), Joey Wright (150), Isaac Bebb (157), Wes Moats (215) and John Siders (285). 

Wrestling resumes with the first round of consolation matches at 9 a.m.

Division I

HILLIARD — Teays Valley had two wrestlers start their district tournament with a pair of wins to advance to the semifinals for their weight classes at the Division I district tournament at Hilliard Darby High School.  

Carson Hix opened with a second-round pin of Olentangy Orange’s Zeller Lyon and he followed it up with 3-2 decision over Mason Spence from Westerville North at 113 pounds.

Josh Zimmer opened his 120-pound tournament with a 16-4 major decision over Hilliard Bradley’s Austin Rohrbach and then won a 7-1 decision over Grant Sedlick from Upper Arlington. 

They need one more win to qualify to the state tournament. 

John Todhunter (106), Ethan Schwalbauch (175), Tyler Tietz (215) and Tristian Graham (285) opened their tournaments with a win but lost in the second round. 

Calvin Videkavich (126), Hayden Shambaugh (144), Rhett Turner (150), Aiden Kennedy (157) and Peter Graham (165) all dropped their opening matches and will be back in action in the consolation bracket starting at 9 a.m.

Division II

GALLIPOLIS — Circleville and Logan Elm opened the district Division II tournament at Gallia Academy Friday night. 

Two rounds of championship matches were contested along with the first round of consolation matches. 

Logan Elm’s Conner Green was the only wrestler to win his first two matches. The heavyweight opened with a pin Minerva’s Hatcher Sabatin in 1:31 and then won a 9-3 decision over Davey Adkins from Waverly to advance to Saturday’s semifinal.

Going 1-1 and trying to fight their way through the consolation brackets from Circleville are Andrew Siembida (106 pounds), Drace Johnson (113) and Jacob Johnson (132).

Going 1-1 for Logan Elm were Dawsen Hudson (113), Blaine Holzschuh (120), Gavin Hoover (126), Nehemiah Hess (132) and David Little (138). 

Wrestling resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday. 

The season concluded for a number of area wrestlers who lost their opening matches and then were defeated in their first consolation match. That included – from Circleville – Maddox Keith (120), Logan Holbrook (150), Ayden Blue (175), David Northam (190), Braylon Morgan (215) and Caihden Morgan (185). Going 0-2 from Logan Elm were Ayden Hudson (106), Scott Gaskin (144) and Bryce Perkin (165).
