Braves, Tigers advance; TV baseball wins last-ever MSL game; Circleville baseball wins on the road, Westfall falls to Chillicothe

CIRCLEVILLE — Circleville got the game going with a big bang to left center and never looked back in beating New Lexington 12-0 to advance to next week’s district semifinal.

A one-out walk by Audrey Cowdery, a two-out single by Gabby McConnell and a walk by Makaylee Holbrook set the stage for Ella Michael. 

The senior sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left-centerfield for a grand slam and a quick 4-0 lead for the No. 6 seeded Tigers.

A two-run triple from Claire Davis and an error brought in three more runs in the second. 

Davis had a two-run single in the third to push the advantage to 9-0. 

Holbrook, Micheal and Kayla Fleck each had RBI singles in the fourth.

McConnel pitched five scoreless innings. She gave up only two hits to the 11th-seeded Panthers and struck out 10.

Circleville (11-13) moves on to face No. 3 Hillsboro (19-4) Wednesday afternoon at Ohio University. Hillsboro advanced by forfeit as Gallia Academy did not have enough players for Wednesday’s scheduled matchup.

No. 2 Unioto and No. 7 Fairland match up at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Athens with the Tigers and Indians to follow. 

SB — Logan Elm 6, McClain 2

CIRCLEVILLE — Sadie Binkley and Ryleigh Wolfe each sent one over the fence to help No. 4 seed Logan Elm advance with a 6-2 win over No. 13 McClain Wednesday. 

After Binkley singled with an out in the first, Wolfe homered to center for a quick 2-0 Logan Elm lead. 

Binkley had a solo shot in the third to make it 3-0.

Peyton Richendollar led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and stole third. She beat the play at home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Taylor Fowler. Tia Fowler then doubled to give LE runners at second and third, but McClain was able to get the next three batters out to keep it at 4-0 in favor of the Braves. 
The Tigers scored their first run with a two-out single in the fifth.

LE’s final run came in the sixth when, with two outs, there was a dropped third strike and Kimberly Petty came in to score. 

McClain put its last run on the board with an RBI double in the seventh.

Binkley pitched all seven innings for the Braves. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits with a walk, and she struck out five.

The Braves (17-8) advance to Ohio University Tuesday where they will play No. 12 Waverly – which upset No. 5 Jackson 6-5 Wednesday – in the second game.

The first game is set for 4 p.m. between No. 1 Sheridan (a 10-0 winner over No. 16 River Valley) and No. 8 Athens (a 7-5 winner over No. 9 Fairfield Union). 

Regular Season
BB — Teays Valley 1, Amanda-Clearcreek 0

AMANDA — Teays Valley had three of its five hits in the first inning to take the early lead and that was all the Vikings needed to beat host Amanda-Clearcreek 1-0 Wednesday. 

Westin Woodrum opened the game with a single. After a flyball out, Jeremiah Fabbro singled to right, advancing Woodrum to second. Landon Vandegrift then doubled to right score Woodrum with what was the game’s only run. 

Trevor Hamilton and Tyler Blankenship singled in the sixth and seventh, respectively, for TV’s other two hits.

The Aces spread 10 hits across the seven innings.

Blayne Barker had three hits for AC while Tanner Affolter and Brady Holbrook each had two.

Gavin Gilpen pitched five scoreless innings for the Vikings to earn the win. He gave up seven hits and struck out six. Luke Reese pitched two scoreless innings for the save. He gave up three hits and struck out one. Neither TV pitcher issued a walk.

Peter Brockman took the loss for the Aces. He pitched a complete game giving up the one earned run on five hits with one walk and he struck out eight. 

Wednesday’s game was the final Mid-State League Buckeye Division contest for the Vikings as they move to the Ohio Capital Conference next school year. 

The Vikings (15-10) finished in second with a 10-4 league record. Amanda-Clearcreek (8-14) was 3-11 in the league.

BB — Circleville 2, Athens 1

THE PLAINS — Circleville took a trip down US 33 Wednesday and came home a 2-1 winner over Athens. 

Drew Thornsley led off the fourth with a double to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Austin Gray brought Thornsley in to score and gave CHS (11-13) a 1-0 lead. 

Glavine Bigam opened the fifth with a single and, after a fly out, Thornsley singled to put Tigers at first and second. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and then a ground out by Gray brought in Bigam for a 2-0 lead. 

The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out double.

Bigam, Thornsley and Lane Adams each had two hits for the Tigers. 

Kaiden Bigley went six innings and faced one batter in the seventh to earn the win on the mound. He gave up the one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. 

Zach Bell came in to record the final three outs and pick up the save. He struck out one.  

BB — Chillicothe 2, Westfall 1

CHILLICOTHE — Chillicothe scored twice in the first and kept visiting Westfall off the board until its final at-bat to take a 2-1 win. 

With an error extending the inning, the Cavaliers had three two-out hits in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. 

The Mustangs had base runners in every inning but were unable to score until the last.

Michael Harwood led off the seventh with a walk. After fly balls to center and shortstop, he was still at first when Noah Stonerock doubled to center, and he came around to score. 

Stonerock had three hits for the Mustangs. 

Stonerock also started for the Mustangs and went five innings. He gave up the two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. 

Cory Green pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two.
