Mustangs advance to state; TV’s Hilgenberg qualifies for districts

WILLIAMSPORT — Westfall placed three golfers in the top 10 Wednesday on the way to winning the Southeast District championship and earning a spot in the state championships. 

The Mustangs had a team score of 325 with Ironton coming in second to also claim a berth in the state tourney with a 326.

Logan Elm finished in a tie for eighth with a score of 356.

Fairland’s Jeremiah Fizer was the medalist with an 18-hole score of 76 and earned a spot in the state tournament as an individual. 

Westfall sophomore Colton Brungarth and Ironton’s Carson Blankenship each shot 77 to place second as individuals. 

In a three-way tie for fourth were Logan Elm’s Grant Cline, Gallia Academy’s Braeden Cardwell and Ironton’s Hunter Freeman with rounds of 79. 

Cline, a state qualifier last year, and Cardwell went into a playoff for the final state berth as an individual with the LE senior losing to Cardwell on the first playoff hole.

Circleville’s Reid Seimetz finished in a two-way tie for seventh with a round of 81. 

Westfall’s Brendan Biegler and Jacob Hicks tied each other for ninth with rounds of 82. 

Dalton Bush finished tied for 15th for the Mustangs with an 84 and Ian Camden was 18th with an 85. 

For the Braves, Graham Williams was 30th with a round of 89, Cole Smith was 43rd with a 92, Parker Calder was 50th with a 96 and Mason Gentry was 60th with a 113.

The Mustangs will take part in the Division II state championships at Firestone Country Club in Akron on Sunday, Oct. 13, and Monday, Oct. 14, at 9 a.m.

Team scores (top two teams qualify for state tournament): Westfall 325, Ironton 326, Fairland 335, West Union 345, Gallia Academy 346, Lynchburg-Clay 352, Fairfield Union 352, Piketon 356, Logan Elm 356, Dawson-Bryant 365.

Vikings eighth at sectional

GRANVILLE — Teays Valley finished eighth at the Central District Division I sectional tournament held at Denison Golf Course Wednesday. 

Dublin Jerome won the tournament with a score of 286, Upper Arlington had a 295, Big Walnut a 305 and Olentangy Berlin claimed the fourth spot at next week’s district tournament with a 310. 

The Vikings had a team score of 330. 

While the Vikings didn’t make it as a team, sophomore Noah Hilgenberg qualified as an individual in posting a round of 73, good for a tie for sixth.

Paxton McCoy shot 85 for the Vikings to finish 42nd, Caden Sherman and Carter Hutchison each had an 86 to tie for 45th and Will Griffith rounded out the Vikings’ day with a 95.

Brady Barnum of Dublin Jerome was the match medalist with a round of 70. 

The district tournament will be held Tuesday at Apple Valley Golf Course, east of Mt. Vernon.
