AKRON — Paige Weiss sits in third place, three shots off the lead, after the first day of action at the Division II state golf championships as her Westfall team and the Westfall boys both compete at Firestone Country Club.
The Westfall senior carded a five-over 75 on the Fazio Course at Firestone Country Club.
Columbus Academy sophomore Eva Lim leads after shooting a 72 and freshman Sophia Fink, from Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, is in second with a 73.
Weiss opened her round with a bogey but added a pair of birdies to finish the front nine with a 1-under 34. Four bogeys and a double on the back nine led to her 75.
Zane Trace freshman Rosella Lattavo is tied for 16th after shooting a (45-39) 84.
The Mustangs are sixth as a team with a score of 363. Columbus Academy leads with a 339 and Garaway is second with a score of 350.
Along with Weiss’ effort, Westfall’s Caroline Sever is 26th with a round of (45-45) 90, Marianna Packer is 33rd with a round of (44-50) 94, Michelle Pickett is 54th with a round of (49-55) 104 and Kathryn Lockhart is 61st with a round of (55-55) 110.
In the Division II boys tournament, the Mustangs sit in 12th with a score of 356. Archbishop Alter holds the first-day lead with a score of 308 and Ottawa Hills lurks one shot behind at 309.
Wyoming senior Finley Bartlett has the lead with a 4-under par 68 as the boys play the North Course. Four players are tied for second after shooting rounds of 74.
Westfall was led by senior Jacob Hicks who shot a round of (41-42) 83, Brendan Biegler is 45th shooting (42-44) 86, Colton Brungarth is 62nd with a round of (45-46) 91, Dalton Bush is 69th with a round of (50-46) 96 and Ian Camden is 102nd with a round of (54-54) 108.
The second round of play begins at 9 a.m. Monday.
