Big defensive effort lifts Braves to win

Logan Elm had a big defensive night in sending Washington Court House back home on the short end of a 52-21 score Monday night.

“Defensively we were really focused,” LE coach Nate Dropsey said. “We knew they were skilled and Noah Haithcock is a really nice player, so we knew we had to put Brady (Neff) on him and that’s a tall task.

“Their guards can shoot the three. I think they hit 11 or 12 threes against Amanda earlier, so I thought we were all pretty bought in with what we needed to do to string stops together.”

The Braves held their visitors scoreless in the second quarter and without any field goals in the third quarter, although the Blue Lions did score on six free throws in the third.

“We need to be able to come out and play with a lot confidence and not dig ourselves into big holes,” Dropsey said. “That’s something we did well tonight. It helps when you make a few shots early and everybody has a lot more confidence.”

Ne’miah Waugh had 11 of his game-high 22 in the first quarter and the Braves scored 29 straight points from the first through the third periods.

LE’s defense held the Blue Lions to just six points in the fourth quarter as the Braves closed out the game.

Dropsey credited some good defensive efforts for the win.

“I thought Keegan Diehl did a tremendous job. He had to guard out on the perimeter a little more than we usually ask him to do,” Dropsey said. “Keegan is just a tremendous leader – vocally and by work ethic. I thought he really stepped up and rebounded the ball well for us.

“I thought Lucas Bialy played really well defensively. He was out in passing lanes and using his length. Owen Russell came in and we’ve asked him to step in to that next guard spot and he handled the pressure well, didn’t try to do too much, just play his role and gave us some good minutes.”

The Braves (1-1) will host Miami Trace Friday.
