New Hope 72, Wellston 51
WELLSTON — New Hope overcame a slow start to win 72-51 at Wellston Friday night.
The Rockets had the first two points of the second quarter to take a 19-11 lead, but the Statesmen outscored their hosts 28-11 the rest of the period for a 39-30 advantage at the half.
Nate Ames had 13 in the period and Hunter Cavanaugh had 11.
“We simply got locked in on defense. We started slow in the first quarter and we had to adjust our attitude and our mindset in the second quarter,” coach Shane Roese said. “We pressured and trapped, forced some turnovers and bad shots that led to transition buckets. Hunter and Nate really ran the floor and finished at the rim.”
New Hope’s lead was 52-40 as the game entered the final quarter.
The Statesmen’s defense kept the Rockets from landing a comeback in the final minutes.
“We really were able to dictate the tempo with our ball pressure and trapping tonight and that led to a lot of easy transition baskets,” Roese said. “Senior Matt Beard was a difference maker on the defensive end. He has had a great start to the season and tonight he made their scorer, Wes Briggs, earn every bucket. And he did a nice job on the glass rebounding.
“Our sixth man, Landen Parker gave us some quality minutes tonight, he defended and had a nice floor game on the offensive end.
“Hunter and Nathaniel really made them pay in transition — they were fun to watch tonight.”
Ames and Cavanaugh each had 25 for New Hope Friday and Xander Rink had 10.
Briggs led Wellston with 21.
New Hope is back in action Saturday at Shawnee State in the Battle in the 740 event taking on Fairfield Union at 3:30.
