Logan Elm 63, Westfall 33 (boys)
CIRCLEVILLE — Logan Elm had a big third quarter on the way to a 63-33 win over Westfall in the third game of the Brad Morris Holiday Classic Saturday.
“I was talking with coach (Kyle) Joseph before the game and what a great weekend and great event honoring Brad. He was a special, special man and loved Pickaway County sports. And we know he loved the Braves,” Logan Elm coach Nate Dropsey said. “It’s a special event and that’s what it’s about is coming together as a community and putting on a great event with wonderful attendance both nights.
“I know he’s looking down and is proud tonight.”
Brady Neff had 11 points in the third quarter as LE turned a 27-18 lead into a 52-31 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Neff had 14 points in the game and a game-high 13 rebounds.
“We’ve sort of leaned on him and want him to be our tough guy,” Dropsey said. “He’s an excellent defender but when he can score like that and rebound like that, it really helps us.”
Tyler Speas led the Braves in scoring with 18 and Ne’miah Waugh put in 13 as nine Braves found the scoring column.
“I just told them that when we play together as a group, we share the basketball and we do it for each other, we can be pretty good,” Dropsey said. “The last two nights I felt we played really well and gave ourselves opportunities. I feel defensively, we’re competing really hard right now so that gives us a chance.”
Joe Wray had 12 for the Mustangs with Ethan Rose scoring nine. Jacob Hicks pulled down eight rebounds for Westfall.
The Braves (3-8) return to action Saturday at Bloom-Carroll.
“It’s nice to get this last one before the new year,” Dropsey said. “We go January 4 to Bloom-Carroll who is always a great basketball team. We know it’s going to be a fight, and we hope we can build off this in practice.”
Westfall (5-5) will look to bounce back Friday night when Adena pays a visit.

CIRCLEVILLE — Westfall scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and hit free throws down the stretch to claim a 54-51 victory over host Logan Elm in the final game of the Brad Morris Holiday Classic.
“I thought tonight was a complete opposite of what last night was,” Westfall coach Joseph Patete said, referring to a 67-24 loss to Circleville. “Last night our girls felt embarrassed and came out tonight to prove that Westfall basketball is not what we showed last night against Circleville.”
Adrian Moehl, who was unavailable on Friday, was back with the Mustangs and led them with 24 points, including going 4-4 at the line in the final 36 seconds.
Along with the offensive lift from Moehl, Westfall got some strong defensive play.
“Marianna Packer and Bella Patete did a great job on (Kimmy) Petty and (Kiki) Ingram,” Patete said. “Our goal coming in was to try to keep those two girls under 25 to give us a chance to win.”
While Ingram finished with 23, Petty was held to three.
“She’s going to score, she’s a very good scorer,” Patete said of Ingram. “Limiting her looks was key for us.”
Kennedy Groff picked up some for the scoring for the Braves with 13 points – she also had nine rebounds – but, overall, the Braves were 17-60 from the field (28 percent).
“I’m not going to say our effort wasn’t there,” LE coach Mike Schultz said. “We had some defensive breakdowns, and Westfall was prepared for this. But when we’re not shooting well, we have to have the plan B and there were a lot of points in the paint that were left as well.”
Along with Moehl’s 24, Mackenzie Cook put in 15 for Westfall.
“Mackenzie Cook played well tonight and so did Lydia Colahan, who really gave us some good minutes off the bench,” Patete said.
Both teams finished the night with 32 rebounds.
Moehl had seven and Cook six to lead Westfall.
Groff’s nine led Logan Elm and Maggie Wilson had eight.
The Mustangs (5-5) are back at it Monday at Fisher Catholic while the Braves (5-7) make a trip to Fairfield Union Friday.
