ASHVILLE — Pickerington Central found another gear in the fourth quarter as the Tigers beat host Teays Valley 80-68 Tuesday.

The game played fairly close through the first three quarters with the Vikings leading 21-17 after one period, 36-33 at the half and 52-50 after three.

The Tigers turned up the pressure in the fourth and as they scored the first six points of the period. After a three from TV’s Owen Hoffhines, the Tigers scored the next eight to lead 65-55 three-and-a-half minutes into the quarter.

Down the stretch, the Tigers hit nine of 12 free throws to keep the Vikings at bay.

“In the fourth quarter, they smacked us, we bobbled a little bit, we just couldn’t get anything going,” TV coach Brian Barnett said. “I don’t know what they took between the third and the fourth quarter, but my goodness, it was a totally different team for them in the fourth quarter.”

TV came out with a good start to the contest in getting up 21-17.

“I thought our kids came out with energy and effort. We talked yesterday and today that we’ve got to come out, we’ve got to have a good start. It doesn’t have to be a fast start, but it has to be a good start with our effort, our attitude, our enthusiasm and we have to play for each other,” Barnett said. “I thought our first quarter, we did that really well. We hit some big shots but the reasons we hit big shots was they were easy shots because we moved the basketball, and people did what they were supposed to do.”

Brody Fields had 12 points in the opening period and had 28 through the first three quarters. When Pickerington ramped up the pressure, the Tigers limited him to a single basket in the last quarter.

Fields finished with 30 points and Jayden Morrison put in 11 for the Vikings.
