Hew Hope 54, Notre Dame 35
CIRCLEVILLE — New Hope’s defense kept visiting Notre Dame in check Saturday night as the Statesmen put up a 54-35 win.
“This is a very, very solid team win against a good team. That team was 10-2 and probably going to be seeded third in the Southeast District in their division,” New Hope coach Shane Roese said. “We played great defense tonight. We’re known for our offense, but our guys were aggressive.”
New Hope had a good first quarter in taking an 11-5 lead and was up 23-15 at the half.
“We’ve done a good job in the first quarter with our energy and our defensive pressure. Playing in front is a lot easier, you can dictate the pace a little bit,” Roese said. “In the second quarter I felt like they started to dictate pace. When we were in transition, we were getting some easy buckets. In the halfcourt, we were having to grind. They left the big boy in the paint and weren’t letting us get our guard penetration.”
The Titans kept the Statesmen from running away with the game in the third but a late three from Tyler Cook helped New Hope to an 11-point advantage (42-31) heading into the final period.
“It jumped up to about 14 or so, they made another run there, Xander Rink got in foul trouble – picked up his third – and they took advantage of that a little bit and got it back to eight,” Roese said “In the fourth quarter, we just went to work.”
Hunter Cavanaugh led the Statesmen with 21 points and Cook finished with 16.
“Hunter Cavanaugh was an absolute floor general tonight,” Roese said. “He took care of the basketball, he scored key buckets early, managed the game down the stretch — I thought he was tremendous.”
Landon Barbaritas was Notre Dame’s leading scorer with eight points while three others had seven.
“I thought tonight we were the physically dominant team and that fires a coach up,” Roese said. “Matt Beard was excellent on the boards; he was effective around the rim. But everybody just executed what we wanted to do defensively. We gave up 35 points – that was awesome.”
The Statesmen (11-2) host Green next Saturday.

Logan Elm 58, Dunbar 57
DAYTON — Kiki Ingram hit a game-winning three pointer as Logan Elm returned from Dayton with a 57-56 win over Dunbar.
Ingram’s three capped a big fourth quarter for the Braves.
LE entered the final eight minutes trailing the Wolverines 44-34.
The Braves battled back and had the game tied at 55-55 when Ingram hit a deep three with six seconds left in the game.
Dunbar made a layup as time expired to close out the game.
Ingram led the Braves with 23, Gillian Savage had 11 and Kennedy Groff and Molly Miller each had 10.
The Braves (7-9) head to Amanda-Clearcreek Tuesday.

Amanda-Clearcreek 36, Waverly 29
AMANDA — Amanda-Clearcreek bounced back from a tough league loss Friday to play some strong defense Saturday night on the way to a 36-29 win.
The Aces held Waverly to two points in the first quarter and led 20-6 at the half.
Taylor Evans led the Aces with 16 points Saturday.
Paige O’Bryant led the Tigers with 15 points – all coming in the second half.
AC (11-4) hosts Logan Elm Tuesday.

Circleville 53, Blom-Carroll 45
CIRCLEVILLE — Boom-Carroll made a run in the second half, but Circleville fought back to take the win 53-45 Saturday.
“I’m proud of how our guys responded tonight,” Circleville coach Evan Callihan said. “We got our butts kicked earlier in the week over at Liberty Union and we worked our guys pretty good the following days after that. We talked about how this game was going to show what we are made of with our back against the wall a little bit.
“Going into the game we stressed the importance of attitude, toughness and togetherness. It really wasn’t even about X’s and O’s.”
Circleville had a 25-21 lead after the first half. The Bulldogs went on a 14-point run during the third to take the lead and the period ended with BC up 38-37.
The Tigers were able to keep BC in check in the fourth quarter to outscore their visitors 16-7 to complete a season sweep of the Bulldogs.
Kole Nungester led the way for Circleville with 20 points while Riley Jenkins had 18 and Ed Kirk nine.
“Kole Nungester did a great job attacking the rim tonight and finishing around the basket. He gave us a lot of momentum offensively and helped keep us steady throughout the night,” Callihan said. “He does a lot of things for us, and I thought he showed a lot of leadership for us in crucial moments tonight.
“Riley Jenkins played strong for us offensively and found a rhythm. He made some big shots late in the third to help us stay within striking distance when Bloom was making their run. Ed Kirk continues to grow for us, and I thought he attacked the boards hard and finished well around the basket.”
Jack Kline had four points and Blain Fowler had two to round out Circleville’s scoring.
“Jack Kline provided a huge spark for us in the fourth quarter on the defensive end. He played well defensively throughout the game and to start to the fourth he caused two Bloom-Carroll turnovers that got us out to a good start. He saved one flying into the stands and those types of plays help lead to success,” Callihan said. “Kiser Cassidy and Blain Fowler gave us a lot of good minutes as sophomores.
“One of the things I’m most proud of is we were able to win the rebounding battle 33-19. We got outrebounded by about that same amount on Tuesday night and we emphasized that throughout the whole week. I’m proud of how our guys responded.”
Circleville (8-5, 5-2) heads to Amanda-Clearcreek Friday night.

Braves second, Mustangs fourth at Miami Trace
WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE — Host Miami Trace won their own 17-team invitational Saturday with Logan Elm taking second and Westfall placing fourth.
The Panthers had amassed 332.5 points with the Braves second at 268.5, Greenville was third with 217 and the Mustangs had 192 for fourth. London was fifth with 111.
All 13 of Logan Elm’s wrestlers ended their day on the podium Saturday.
Dawsen Hudson and Gavin Hoover led the way for the Braves. Hudson won the title at 113 pounds and Hoover was first at 132.
David Little was second at 138 and Jeffrey Thompson was second at 215 pounds.
Westfall had nine wrestlers place with Brady Speakman second at 120 pounds and Bryson Campfield second at 126.

Aces seventh at Deno Invitational
THE PLAINS — Amanda-Clearcreek finished seventh in a 23-team field Saturday at the John Deno Invitational hosted by Athens High School.
New Lexington won the tournament with 428 points and Athens was second with 352. The Aces had 165.5.
Bodie Martin led the AC contingent in winning the 157-pound weight class.
Kyle Kougher was fourth for AC at 144 pounds.
