Statesmen win at Hillsboro; BC nips Vikings at the buzzer

New Hope 72, Hillsboro 61

HILLSBORO — New Hope went on the road and held off a tough Hillsboro team in getting a 72-61 win Thursday.

“A good start and a decisive fourth quarter were the difference tonight,” New Hope coach Shane Roese said.

That good start came in the form of a 22-12 first period.

“We shot it well in the first quarter with (Nathaniel) Ames and (Hunter) Cavanaugh hitting two 3s apiece,” Roese said.

The Indians closed the gap in the second quarter to end the first period with the Statesmen’s lead down to three points — 30-37.

Hillsboro kept it up in the third and had the game tied at 44-44 and the quarter came to an end with New Hope up 50-48.

“Hillsboro turned up the pressure a little bit in the second and third quarters that slowed us down,” Roese said. “They were able to turn some misses and turnovers into baskets to cut the lead to two heading into the fourth quarter. Defensively, we wore them down in the fourth and pulled away for the win.”

Xander Rink led the Statesmen with 22 points, Ames had 20 and Cavanaugh had 18.

Trey Captain and Jack Howland led Hillsboro (6-6) with 16 points each.

“It was a really good team win, they made four or five runs at us and even tied the game at 44 in the third,” Roese said, “but we answered every run.”

The Statesmen (12-2) host Green Saturday at Ohio Christian University.

Bloom-Carroll 46, Teays Valley 44

CARROLL — Bloom-Carroll converted a pair of free throws with no time on the clock to knock off visiting Teays Valley 46-44 Thursday night.

The Vikings had the game tied at 44-44 after a three-pointer from Areyana Karshner with 18 seconds left.

The Bulldogs survived TV’s pressure in getting the ball down the floor and took a shot at the win with four seconds left. While the shot didn’t fall, the rebound went out of bounds off the Vikings, leaving .9 seconds.

BC’s Emma Sorrell got the inbounds pass coming down the lane, put up a shot and was fouled as the buzzer sounded. She stepped up to the line and sank both shots for the BC win.
