Patriot Prep 57, New Hope 53

COLUMBUS — Patriot Prep had a strong finish to send New Hope home on the short end of a 57-53 score Tuesday night.

The Eagles also had a strong start in getting out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter but the Statesmen responded in the second quarter to finish the half with a 25-23 lead.

“For some reason we played on our heels the first four minutes of the game,” New Hope coach Shane Roese said. “Patriot is a big, strong, athletic team and it took us half a quarter to match their physicality. Once we did, we settled in and played some good basketball in the second period.”

After an evenly played third left New Hope still up two (38-36), the Statesmen stayed in front for most of the fourth and were up 45-43 with 2:45 left.

The Eagles then went on a 9-0 run over the next 90 seconds to get control 52-45. Hew Hope had the difference to three points with 30 seconds left but was unable to add anymore to its total.

“We really were in control at the five-minute mark, but we had about four or five untimely turnovers down the stretch that ended up being the difference in the game,” Roese said. “Certainly not an effort issue, we have just played two really good teams on the road our last outings and have come up a little short. It doesn’t feel good, but this group will bounce back – I guarantee it.”

The Statesmen (14-4) were led by Xander Rink with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, Hunter Cavanaugh had 12 points and six assists and Tyler cook tallied nine points.

New Hope returns to play Saturday night hosting Vinton County at Ohio Christian University.
