WORTHINGTON — Teays Valley saw its season come to an end as the Vikings dropped a 43-29 decision at Worthington Kilbourne Monday night in the Central District Division II tournament.

The 11th-seeded Vikings overcame nine first quarter turnovers to hold a 9-4 lead.

“We talked about being aggressive this whole season, talked about trying to take care of the basketball, execute — I think it’s one of those things when you’re playing a team that’s 17-5, there’s still that in the back of your mind, ‘They’re really good.’ But I knew we were a type of team that could easily handle that and play,” TV coach Trevor Younkin said. “I felt like showing them in the first quarter – winning the first quarter – that they’re not used to tournament play, they haven’t won a tournament game in the last three years, and we’ve been here.”

An Avery Mann basket made the score 11-4 early in the second. Six more turnovers and 1-9 shooting from the field led to those being the only points TV had in the period. The Wolves didn’t shoot much better as they were 4-11 from the field, but five offensive rebounds helped, and they hit two of their three free throws to go in at the half up 16-11.

“Being the team they have and the season they had, they fought through it and caused us to get frustrated, turn the ball over, we couldn’t attack,” Younkin said. “There were a lot of X factors that I’ll hang up on the hook that it was due to our youth.”

After Kilbourne opened the second half with a score, back-to-back baskets from Tessa Horsley brought TV to within 18-15. That was as close as the Vikings could get to their hosts.

The third ended with the Wolves up 31-19.

Junior Cooper McManaway and Horsley, a sophomore, led the Vikings with 11 points each.

Oliviah Wilkerson led Kilbourne with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Mia Williams had 12 points and Audrey Bennett scored 11.

The Wolves ended the night with a 33-25 rebounding edge.

Horsley led the Vikings with nine rebounds.

No. 3 Kilbourne (18-5) moves on to face No. 5 Mount Vernon Friday in a district championship game at the state fairgrounds.

The Vikings finish the season with an 8-16 record and were fifth in the Buckeye Division playing their first season in the Ohio Capital Conference.

The youth that led to a few growing pains this season — the varsity roster consisted of one senior, three juniors and seven sophomores most of the year — should be a bright spot for the Vikings when they come back for summer workouts and prepare for the next season.

“It’s a learning lesson, like I told them in the locker room,” Younkin said. “Now you take this and take what Kylie (Burgett), our only senior left us – which was team spirit, a good attitude and being coachable – we’ve got to apply it to the summer and apply it to next season.”
