AC’s Martin wins district title as eight wrestlers move on to state

Eight local wrestlers have earned a spot in next week’s state championship tournament. 

Amanda-Clearcreek’s Bodie Martin is the lone district champion having taken the title in the Division III tournament held in Troy this weekend.

Teays Valley had three wrestlers earn spots from the Division I district at Hilliard Darby, Logan Elm had three qualify from the Division II district at Steubenville and Westfall got one through at Steubenville. 

Division III District at Hobart Arena

TROY — Amanda-Clearcreek’s Bodie Martin kept up his winning ways in earning a third trip to the state championships over the weekend. 

After winning his first two matches Friday, Martin recorded a technical fall (16-0) in the semifinals to advance past Versaille’s Quentin Grillot (29-15).

In the 150-pound finals, he met up with Covington’s Caleb Ryman who sported a 47-0 record. 

Their tightly fought bout ended in an ultimate tiebreaker round with Martin scoring to win the district title 3-1 and improve his own record to 42-0. 

Amanda-Clearcreek’s Bodie Martin stayed unbeaten on the season as he won the 150-title at the district tournament in Troy.

Reese Marshall (27-5) lost his first match in the consolation rounds Saturday to complete his season at 113 pounds. 

Graham Local advanced 12 wrestlers to easily outpace the competition to win the team title with 299.5 points with Miami East second at 109. Amanda-Clearcreek was 19th with 29.

Division I District at Hilliard Darby

HILLIARD — Teays Valley has three wrestlers who earned spots in next weekend’s state tournament with two others placing.

Josh Zimmer, Aiden Kennedy and Peter Graham all will be competing at Ohio State on Friday. 

Zimmer took second at the district. Competing at 120 pounds, he won his first two matches Friday and won his semifinal against Upper Arlington’s Hunter Shupe (35-9). In the finals, Zimmer (32-3) was pinned by Kurt Mokros (40-6) of Olentangy.

Teays Valley’s Aiden Kennedy took fourth at 175 pounds to earn a spot in the state tournament.

Kennedy finished fourth in the 175-pound weight class. After winning his first two matches Friday, Kennedy was pinned in the semifinals, came back to win a consolation semifinal with a 15-7 major decision before losing in the consolation finals 10-2. 

Graham won his 190-pound opener Friday before dropping into the consolation bracket with a loss in the second round. Coming back Saturday morning, Graham (31-13) advanced with a second-round pin, a tech fall (15-0) and an 8-7 decision before being pinned in the first round of the consolation finals to place fourth.

After dropping into the consolation bracket, John Todhunter won his first two 113-pound consolation matches Saturday before losing by technical fall in the consolation semifinals. He took fifth place with a pin in the finals. 

After being pinned in his first match Friday, heavyweight Tristian Graham battled back Saturday with two pins and a 9-5 decision but was pinned in the semifinals and then in the fifth-place final to place sixth. 

Teays Valley’s Peter Graham finished fourth at the Division I district tournament at Hilliard Darby.

At 132 pounds, Carson Hix (32-10) lost his first consolation match 6-3 to complete his season. 

Freshman Andrew Liddell (23-12) won his first two 150-pound consolation matches 10-9 and 9-7 before ending his season on the wrong end of and 11-2 major decision in the quarterfinals.

Dublin Coffman won the team competition with 240 points with Olentangy Liberty second with 173.5. Teays Valley placed sixth with 95 points.

Division II District at Steubenville

STEUBENVILLE — Logan Elm is sending three wrestlers to the state championships and Westfall is sending one after a weekend of wrestling in the Division II district at Steubenville High School. Circleville’s remaining wrestlers completed their seasons at the tournament. 

Moving on to the state tournament for the Braves are Dawsen Hudson (113 pounds) and Gavin Hoover (132) who each took third and Conner Green (285) who finished fourth. 

Eli Wright (175) will be representing Westfall. 

Hudson (46-3) won his first two matches Friday before losing his semifinal Saturday. He fought back to tech fall his last two opponents in placing third. 

Hoover (51-2) had won his first two matches Friday but lost his championship semifinal Saturday morning. He came back to win a 7-0 decision in the semifinals and took third with a pin in 2:39.

Green won his first match Friday but fell into the consolations after the second round. 

Saturday, he came back with a pin, then beat Circleville’s Caihden Morgan 4-3 in the quarterfinals. He won his semifinal 7-2 before placing fourth as he was beat 4-1 in the finals. 

Westfall’s Wright won his first match Friday before dropping into the consolation bracket after his second match. Wrestling four times Saturday, Wright (34-9) advanced with a major decision, then pinned his next two opponents before the freshman won his third-place match with a 15-6 major decision. 

Completing their seasons for Circleville on Saturday were Drace Johnson (10-7) at 106 pounds and Morgan (34-9) at heavyweight. 

Wrapping up their seasons for the Braves were Blaine Holzschuh (25-22) at 126, David Little (36-18) at 138, Nehemiah Hess (35-19) at 144, Bryson Parish (26-24) at 150 and Jeffrey Thompson (28-19) at 215. 

Seven Mustangs completed their seasons Saturday: Dax Tanner (113 pounds, 24-14), Brady Speakman (20-8), Bryson Campfield (126, 33-7), Wyatt Ward (144, 20-5), John Holderby (190, 21-9), Wes Moats (215, 23-10) and Russ Colohan (285, 13-13).

In the team competition, Beaver Local and Steubenville tied for the team title with 143.5 points. Indian Valley was third with 106.5. Logan Elm was 11th with 65 points, Westfall took 18th with 42 and Circleville was 30th with six points.
