COLUMBUS — Logan Elm’s Dawsen Hudson has given himself a shot at third place Sunday while teammate Gavin Hoover will be wrestling for seventh when wrestling resumes at the 88th Annual Boys State Wrestling Tournament.
Wrestling at 113 pounds in the consolation quarterfinals Saturday night, Hudson went up against Mykale Schneider from Wauseon.
Schneider (20-4) got the first point of the matchup with an escape in the second period. Hudson got two back points, but Schneider recorded another escape to end the second tied 2-2.
With about 40 seconds left in the match, Hudson got an escape to take the lead and survived a stalling warning to advance with a 3-2 decision.
“That was a tight match. He wrestled tough, got some backs, got up on him and did what we had to do to finish the match,” LE coach Jake Daniels said. “He’s basically wrestled all the way back after losing the first match. A lot of times kids lose that match, they drop into that consolation bracket and are devastated. A lot of times they don’t come back and wrestle back as well.
“Give it to Dawson, he’s really come out and wrestled all the way back.”
Hudson (39-4) will face Bronko Braun (40-4) from Indian Valley Sunday morning in the consolation semifinals with the winner wrestling for third place.
Points were at a premium in Hoover’s quarterfinal matchup with Rocco Czarnecki from Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, with Czarnecki (38-8) coming out on top 2-1 in overtime.
After a scoreless first, Hoover got on the board in the second with an escape and Czarnecki scored on an escape in the third.
They wrestled a scoreless sudden death period and went scoreless in the first overtime before Czarnecki got an escape 12 seconds into the second OT to win the match.
“We knew the kids was going to be defensive and it was going to be a tough match, it just didn’t go our way,” Daniels said. “We were in on the leg two or three times and couldn’t finish. That kid really didn’t do anything but block us.
“It just sucks for Gavin. Basically, he’s got to try to finish where he did last year and place where he did last year.”
Hoover (53-4) will face off against Copley’s Desmond Childers (40-7) for seventh place Sunday morning.
Hoover placed seventh last year at 126 pounds.
The consolation semfinals for all divisions begin at 9:30 Sunday morning with the consolation finals starting at 10:45.
